Some two dozen West New York parents and school children protested at town hall today demanding that bus transportation be provided for some students while the Harry L. Bain School on Broadway near 62nd Street is being renovated and students attend a school six blocks away.

As of the 2010 United States Census, West New York had the third-highest percentage of Hispanics in the state, at 78.1%, accounting for 2.5% of the state’s Hispanic population. Though Native Americans comprise less than 1% of the city’s population, they doubled in the 2000s, and combined with Union City’s Native Americans comprise 38% of the county’s Native American population.[33] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_New_York,_New_Jersey
Wow is this helicopter parenting?
I walked with my cousins to elementary school. Think it was six blocks. Always visited the store on the way back to ggrandma’s house to get soda and junkfood. That was the early 80s. No cellphones. We played outside with no parental supervision too but there were always adults watching cause they would alert the grandparents if some kid did something bad. And this was the ‘hood!
It’s not in NYC-——it’s Jersey.
.
This is not NYC. It is West New York, New Jersey.
West New York is in NJ. This is the west side of Manhattan.
I would walk a little kid to school..6-10-year-olds, perhaps. But at 11, a kid should be able to safely walk that far....which isn’t far at all. Tell your kid about strangers, and there should be no problem. Make them walk in a group.
I thought it was the Lincoln Center area because of the Broadway and 62nd St. address! I’ve never been to West New York although my husband’s aunts live there.
It was the dark of the moon, on the 6th of June, in a Kenworth, pullin' logs...
They could ride a bike.
