Labor Day stems from deadly labor strike, but few Americans know the history

Cookouts now mark Labor Day, instead of parades honoring country’s labor movement, says AFL-CIO honcho Richard Trumpka. (Picture)

Few recall the bloodstained origins of this holiday as we fire up the grill, throw on the burgers and dogs and turn on the U.S.

And, in a sign of the times, the Sunday morning network news shows didn’t even offer their usual, token pre-Labor Day weekend spot for the head of the nation’s labor movement.

“No,” said AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka when I asked him. “No invitations this year.”

I told the former mine worker-turned-lawyer that there seems to be a precious lack of understanding of the holiday’s origins.

In fact, it stems from an awful confrontation in Chicago in 1894 that saw federal marshals and the Army kill 30 striking Pullman railroad strikers.

Soon after the Pullman walkout ended, Congress and President Grover Cleveland quickly passed and signed legislation for the holiday.

That history is rarely taught in schools and there are few full-time labor journalists anymore.

Chicago. The birthplace of all things liberal, socialistic and communistic. And no where else can you find more unemployed Blacks or fewer unemployed illegals. Happy Labor Day!

Its always best to assume the left is lying and go looking for further confirmation.

The Haymarket affair is taught as a labor strike that led to a brutal crackdown but if you read the court transcripts of the day you find that they were anarchists and they were guilty.

Happy Small Business day all.

Boo hoo. How many Americans think Memorial Day is the day we mourn our old furniture, but get deep discounts on that new living room set?

Or has to do with end of model year closeouts at car dealerships?

And this jack ass is upset because he didn't get invitations to talk about a riot striking for "worker's rights."

Ah, the deadly anarchist movement! Led by so many immigrants who had no idea of American history and/or the Constitution. Of course, there were plenty of Americans on the Left who led these creeps down the garden path.

On my great grandfather’s declaration of intent to become an American citizen he had to swear (to God) that he wasn’t an anarchist.

If Trumka had his way, we’d make May Day the official holiday.

History also tells of Labor Unions striking when our troops needed materials to fight the Japanese and Germans. They didn’t give a fig about the troops, just self serving wages.

As a kid, I studied the anarchist movement. It was fascinating and deadly. My grandfather was horrified to find I had a bio of Red Emma as he called her.

One of the most interesting books I have is by historian Paul Avrich who managed to find Italian anarchists who were part of the Sacco/Vanzetti cell. He broke the omerta and got these men and women to admit their total guilt and previous history of violence. Vanzetti probably murdered a priest in the Midwest during WWI.

Boo hoo hoo. On the Fourth of July, most people enjoy cookouts instead of recalling the sacrifices of our founding fathers. And that was more important, to me anyway.

When I was in elementary school back in the 50’s we had a May Day celebration at school. We also practiced hiding under the desks and even had an evacuation drill.

FTA: ...kill 30 striking Pullman railroad strikers.

From the Department of Redundancies Department, I'm sure.

Oh, that is so cool! Thank you for sharing.

As someone with an interest in the movies of Chaplin, Keaton & Lloyd, I’m always amazed at the anarchist jokes in these movies. In fact, Harold Lloyd blew off a finger when holding the typical anarchist bomb of the period.

Of course the Marxist Filth stole May Day themselves since it was an ancient day of celebration.

What bugs me is that an apparent majority think Memorial Day is Veterans Day.

Bloodstained origins? I have a bit of experience dealing with labor unions. And my experience was in the 1990's not the 1890's. Violence, intimidation, thug tactics. These were the stock in trade for some of the construction unions in my area. I know a guy who was assaulted with a pipe. Equipment was vandalized, job sites were sabotaged. I have a 'star' which is a strategically bent piece of metal salted in the drive areas of a worksite and designed to puncture tires. Not to mention the name calling and spitting that happened to workers who were doing nothing worse than simply going to work.

The homes of the owners of construction companies were picketed around the clock. On one site, a bulldozer mysteriously fired itself up at a worksite one night and put itself in gear. It only stopped after it ran over a couple of cars in an adjoining dealership. It could have just as easily killed a couple of kids. The local media and legal authorities treated it as a joke (Killdozer!).

And the worst part is, all this 'labor movement' malarkey is a sham. It acts as a front for a series of corrupt labor leaders who routinely squander union dues and pension funds.

Bloodstained origins, indeed.

Labor Day: A holiday celebrating Marxists trying to take over companies by taking advantage of the needs of labor workers in high risk manufacturing and mining jobs to have safer working conditions and better pay. The Marxists to this day steal significant monies from their union, and even non-union, members. Marxists are nothing but thieves, and unions are their tool to do so.
