Colorado Boy Hospitalized After Drinking Dairy Queen Milk Shake Tainted With Cleaning Products

Riley Chase, 7, drank a vanilla milk shake his mother, Lisa, ordered for him at a drive-thru. After complaining of a burning sensation, it was later learned that an employee had accidentally put floor cleaner and degreaser into the vanilla flavoring.

A Colorado boy was hospitalized after drinking a Dairy Queen milk shake contaminated by a toxic chemical cleaner.

Riley Chase, 7, suffered a bizarre burning sensation in his mouth shortly after sipping from the vanilla shake bought at a Dairy Queen drive-thru in Thornton on Thursday.

His mom Lisa tasted the drink and also felt like it was burning all the way down to her stomach, she said.

“You couldn't even taste the ice cream in it, it tasted like you were drinking a very strong cleanser, then the burn started instantly," she told Fox 8.

She entered the eatery to demand an explanation, but says workers were not helpful. Later, she called the store and a manager reportedly confessed there'd been a mix-up. He admitted an empty vanilla syrup bottle had been left in a sink where an employee had poured toxic floor cleaner and degreaser inside.

Another staffer picked it up, thinking it was clean, and refilled it with the syrup, he later told 9 News.

Riley and his mom rushed to a local hospital, where they were treated for internal burns before being released.

Two other customers have also received medical treatment after drinking the poisonous beverage, ABC News reports.

Both workers have since been written up, reports 9 News, and the franchise owner — who said the incident was a "terrible accident" — is urging other potential victims to come forward.

Lawsuits coming and discovery of what the employees knew and when did they know it will be crucial.

If it’s owned by Warren Buffet, it’s probably another ne of his attempts to get ride of the middle and working classes.

The #1 safety rule in cleaning food service equipment is to NEVER decant a cleaning product into an unmarked or repurposed container. EVER.

I wonder if the employees speaka de Ingles?

It appears from the text above that the vanilla bottle was empty, and someone used it to store cleaning fluids. Another employee saw it in the sink and used it without checking. Lots of food service No-nos in this scenario.

Amen to that! My first job was as a dishwasher/cleanup guy for a bakery. They drilled that into my head from day one. Everything in the proper container, everything stored in the proper place.

That's one possibility. Another possibility is that employees may be taking pot breaks.
