Emp and lightning are different. EMP is much faster than lightning for one. Lightning will also follow a conductor where Emp will go straight thru any non metallic surface.
Well, if it actually happens, I’ll say I heard it here first. Of course, I won’t be able to prove it unless I keep a hard copy... drat...
Then after 2-3 days, depending on where you live, and whether or not you are prepared, you will be in fear of your lives, with neighbors and strangers knocking on your door. Sometimes they'll be by themselves, others will be in makeshift packs with bats, and sticks and knives, and, maybe... guns. THIS is the time to put up a sign "We own guns and know how to use them!" on the front lawn.
I predict, eventually, there will be "authorities" both 'real' and pretend coming door to door. They'll claim to be there to help, but in reality they are either going to try to take you out of your home and ship you to a real, but barely functioning 'camp' (for your safety) or they will be there to walk you 2 miles away to a drainage ditch turned mass grave. They are only interested in what you have in your house: food, water, guns, ammo, fuel, and white girls ages 12-40. This will be especially true if this was planned by our own government.
In one year, if your community doesn't have REAL organizers to: assign jobs based on a person's individual skills, protect and defend your block or neighborhood, and even go on the offensive from time to time, nine out of ten of the population will be dead.
And the way things are unfolding, your dream is increasingly becoming a reality.
Thanks for sharing. I still vividly remember a dream I had when I was very very young. A large plane full of “foreigners”, as I described it back then to my folks and siblings, landed in the north field of our property. I approached the plane and all were looking at me out the windows. .. their heads tilting left and right. I really haven’t had that many other dreams in life that I can remember except the one that many have of never attending a class that is soon to end and trying to find it. Perhaps there is an explanation to that one.

The speed is relevant because standard lightning and surge protection don’t respond quickly enough. EMP surges will pass right through those elements.
The metalic shielding of wiring is irrelevant because the EMP surge will go through any opening which is not a conductor. It will hit a radio antenna and fry the electronics its conencted too. It will go through the windows and fry the cockpit electronics.
It all depends on the strength what direction the attach comes from.
I guess thats why I worked on lots of military systems which were shielded against this wildly exaggerated threat.
Or anything else within line of sight of the EMP blast. So a strong enough blast at 150-200KM altitude would go quite a ways.
No, you worked on those systems because there is a real risk to military systems in the field. Obviously you understand power density and the effect distance from the blast has. I was objecting to the nonsense that one HEMP could take out the entire country and the hysteria about it. Even the Wikipedia article is full of hyperbole and vague terms. The US military deployed an EMP weapon in Iraq with a limited area taken out. It wasn’t the end of the world.

Well thats funny, because I didn’t work in the field. I worked:
- in SAC HQ, 4 stories under ground
- Supporting a fighter wing, no field involved
- supporting a combat squadron forward positioned with the Army (ok this one was in the field) The Army sucks BTW. ( no offense)
- in NORAD, under about 1800 feet of granite
The effective distance the EMP burst can cause damage depends on the height above ground and strength. A relatively small bomb (2 MT) detonated about 200km above Kansas would effect most of the nation.
The size of devices North Korea and Iran have would require 2 or 3 bombs.
