Never seen a race there, remember visiting when I was a kid on the way back from NYC, summer road trip. You could just drive right up to the track.

I got to watch the original Shelby cobras dominate at Watkins Glen. 1964ish. Been back a couple of times for some wild parties in the infield years back. I’ll bet it’s more family friendly nowadays.

Yeah for whatever reasons, debauchery, which used to be a spectator feature at many major race events has either gone indoors or disappeared completely.

The snake pit at Indy was ruthlessly suppressed by track management and the state excise cops. Then they wondered why attendance fell off. But I can see management’s side of the argument also, in an era ruled by tort lawyers.

Family sues NASCAR, Pocono over 2012 lightning death:

NASCAR blew off a severe storm warning at the Pocono 400 race until the storm got so bad it had to stop the race, and 6 minutes later a fan was killed by lightning in the parking lot, his family claims in court.

Brian Zimmerman was killed by lightning at 5:00pm on Aug. 5, 2012, his widow Marion claims in the Court of Common Pleas. She sued Pocono International Raceway and NASCAR, on Aug. 1.

Ten other people were injured by lightning, one of whom sued NASCAR and the Pocono Raceway in July.

Zimmerman claims that NASCAR and the Pocono Raceway received a severe thunderstorm warning from the National Weather Service at 4:12pm, but they "did nothing" to stop the race or warn fans until 4:21, when they "attempted to use social media" to warn race fans of the approaching storm. Brian Zimmerman did not have access to social media at the raceway, his widow says. The defendants stopped the race at 4:54pm At 4:59, they used social media again to warn fans to seek shelter. Brian was hit by lightning at 5:00pm and died. In the July lawsuit, Jason Peneck's wife Erin claims her husband suffered "severe and permanent injuries, including, but not limited to, a traumatic brain injury, second degree burns, and dysautonomia." There is a French-made fan version of that game available on the internets. Someone used to host a server for circuits, but they closed it down a few years ago.

The stand-alone game lets you play alone against 7 other computer-controlled cars. There are about 30 fan-made tracks available.

And now for the STUPID REPORT

Sabates' grandson killed in shooting:

An accidental shooting over the weekend in Florida claimed the life of a grandson of Chip Ganassi Racing co-owner Felix Sabates. The South Florida Sun-Sentinel has relayed the findings of a Palm Beach Gardens police report on the incident. The report says it took place during a party in which a group of friends were playing with a 9mm pistol while drinking and doing drugs. An unnamed 17-year-old pointed the gun at multiple people inside the apartment before pointing it at 18-year-old Feliciano "Chany" Sabates. The gun then went off, and Sabates was hit in the chest by the round. Sabates died at the scene. The shooter now faces a charge of manslaughter by culpable negligence. (NBC Sports)(8-6-2014)

Dover introduces Reward Our Troops Program:

Dover International Speedway has announced its all-new Reward Our Troops program, a ticket donation initiative that provides individual ticket purchasers or businesses the opportunity to make a contribution toward sending an active member of the military, a Veteran or family members of our fallen heroes to a Sunday NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at the Monster Mile. Partnering with the Veteran Tickets Foundation, the Speedway will offer each person who purchases tickets to a Sunday race at the Monster Mile the chance to make a monetary donation of their choosing that will go toward a ticket in the Reward Our Troops Program. The Veteran Tickets Foundation will then distribute tickets through www.VetTix.org, free of charge, to the brave men and women that make up our military, and their families. In addition to individual ticket buyers, businesses will also have the opportunity to participate in three tiers - donating 10 tickets for $400, 25 tickets for $1,000 or 65 tickets for $2,600. Anyone that makes a donation will be eligible for a tax write-off, and will receive thank you notes from the military and photos from the event.(Dover Speedway)(8-6-2014)

I think it is absolutely amazing that those suits can protect the riders so much that they walk away from 150 mph crashes.

Here is a link to a web archive of the site. All the links are still live, so you can download the executable and all of the tracks.

National Guard to end motorsports sponsorships:

After undergoing an intensive internal review, the Army National Guard is set to make changes to its sports sponsorship approach to recruitment marketing. These substantial changes include an end to its sponsorship of NASCAR driver #88-Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Graham Rahal in the Indy Racing League (IRL). “Significantly constrained resources and the likelihood of further reductions in the future call for more innovative and cost-effective ways of doing business,” said Maj Gen Judd H. Lyons, acting Director of the Army National Guard. The Army Guard spent $32 million on its NASCAR sponsorship and $12 million on its IndyCar sponsorship for 2014. Future programs will rely on much smaller budgets. And while sports sponsorships have played an important role in helping the Guard build strong brand awareness, existing Army National Guard sponsorship contracts with NASCAR and IRL are set to expire at the end of the current season, he said. “Our NASCAR sponsorship was principally a marketing program, intended primarily to build awareness of the National Guard as a career option” said Johnson. “The NASCAR sponsorship allowed the National Guard to leverage a 77 million fan base and the sport’s most popular driver.” Motorsports sponsorships are not the only programs to be impacted by decreasing budgets. Since 2012, the Army Guard has reduced sports sponsorships from six-including professional fishing and motorcycle racing-to just the NASCAR and IndyCar sponsorships. In fiscal year 2015, the Army Guard’s marketing budget is expected to be about half of what it was just three years ago in fiscal year 2012.(Army National Guard)

Hendrick Statement:

“Our team has a contract in place to continue the National Guard program at its current level in 2015. We have not been approached by the Guard about potential changes and plan to honor our current agreement.”(Hendrick Motorsports)(8-6-2014)
