Man, dog find abandoned newborn on side of road

DIAMOND LAKE, Mich. (WOOD) — A man walking his dog in the Diamond Lake area Monday morning came upon a newborn baby abandoned on the side of the road by a young mother.

The baby, who is recovering at the hospital, was discovered on the side of a dirt road around 10:30 a.m. in the area of Marion Road, north of White Cloud.

Jeff Kopp said he normally doesn’t walk along Marion, but his dog Bobby seemed to be on a mission Monday morning, pulling him down the road and toward a satellite dish.

“He brought me over to about here, and there’s when I saw what (looked like) a rabbit at first,” Kopp said.

Bobby sniffed at something near the satellite dish, which is about three feet from the road. Kopp came closer, and that’s when he realized what that “rabbit” actually was: A baby.

“Then it moved. That’s when I started yelling,” he said.

He called out to his neighbor to call 911 and shouted for his wife and daughter.

Joggers and dog walkers seem to find the most interesting stuff! Usually it’s dead bodies.

That Michigan Man will never forget the walk he took with Bobby, that ended when they found a baby! Thank God the right kind of people found this child. The dog did not chomp the infant either. This was the right animal to hunt for a baby without harming it. I do not understand how a girl could abandon the child as though it was an unwanted hamster. I don’t understand. I am thankful however, that she allowed her child to live. Her family might want the child to raise seperately from the immature “mom’. That happens quite a bit.

The girl’s nickname should be Bunny.

I do not understand how a girl could abandon the child as though it was an unwanted hamster.

Maybe she dumped her child because she was abandoned by a "boyfriend" who treated her as though she were a used piece of Kleenex?

With all the sex education in the schools, something is definitely not being taught: intercourse between a man and a woman results in the conception of a child. A child. Not a piece of "tissue."

I am thankful however, that she allowed her child to live.

Lucky that the child was found in time and by a good dog who didn't harm her and a man who sought help. Surrender at a fire/police station would have been better, but at least the child will live.
