What is Change Blindness and Why Does it Happen?

Change Blindness: In visual perception, change blindness is a normal phenomenon of the brain which show in light that the brain does not have a precise representation of the world but a lacunar one, made of partial details. Despite the name, this phenomenon does not affect the eyes but the brain, and as such is bound to happen to all the human senses. This phenomenon is still in research, but results suggests that the brain estimates the importance and usefulness of information prior to deciding to store them or not. Another issue is that the brain cannot see a change happening to an element that it has not yet stored.

I just ran across this concept of 'Change Blindness' I think it is pretty important and should be added to our usage and understanding of 'Normalcy Bias'.

For me it explains how I can be 'blind-sided' by something that wasn't there and now is 'there' and vice versa. Now think about that in our normal everyday lives, changes happen so quickly that we miss most of them because our brains made a snap decision that the change wasn't immediately important to our daily lives and ignored the change.

And that my FRiends can come back to 'Bite us in the Butts' when seconds and minutes count in recognizing situations and events that will affect us, possibly very adversely.

People blind all their life, if they gain vision for the first time can’t immediately interpret what they see.

In a psychological sense it’s why people don’t realize a war is coming, or that Obama is governing as a radical leftist.

I am shocked on nearly a daily basis in the changes to the society around me that it seems nearly no one else even notices.

The changes are so profound over the last few decades that I honestly feel that I am now living in an entirely different country with a handful of people from where I used to live long ago here with me also.

‘Change Blindness’

Right... that is what happens when “O” supporters find that all the freebies in his ‘Hope and Change’ scam are really NOT free!

Same here. The TV was on last night and some of the commercials were downright disgusting. I don’t remember anything like that when my son was growing up, and he’s 23 now.

And I can see our step towards fascism grow monthly, maybe even weekly. It used to be at a slower pace, but has ramped up.

This is probably how some Germans felt in 1935-37.

what is really shocking is... go visit the leftest websites... and they think the country is moving further right!

It’s like we live in alternative universes.

I agree 100% with what you say.

We are probably history's richest and most spoiled nation ever to be formulated...because SO many have SO much.
BUT, that's just not good enough for the naysayers.

The Boomers brought up these selfish, egocentric, selfies. What DID we expect from godless, faithless, self-serving, irreligious, blasphemous spoiled brats ?

Yes. I grew up in the 70s and 80s, and I remember with fondness my little hometown and the people I dealt with therein.

I had a paper route at 10 (now relegated to adults), worked topping corn at 12 (now relegated to migrant workers/illegals), worked odd jobs at 14 (mostly mowing lawns and working for the owner of the company my dad worked for at the owner's ranch - things the owner could now be in trouble for were I to have gotten injured - at the time it would have been a non-issue). Then at 16, I was finally able to get a job at that company. I started working with equipment, then the law said I couldn't work with that equipment until I turned 18 - even though I'd been working on it safely for a year. Old muscle cars were a dime a dozen, and my first and second cars were '67 and '66 Novas I'd rebuilt with my dad at the time (good luck doing the same now). No bicycle helmets and pads (unless we were racing in BMX races), no mandatory seatbelt laws (we're still here), no full-on government intrusion into our lives.

Nowadays, it's getting to be that if it isn't forbidden, it's mandatory. Kinda like some old regimes we thought we'd relegated to the dust bins of history. Now, it's our turn. I fear for my kids. I honestly don't know what I can do to ensure they have a country to grow up in. I wonder if it's the same feeling our forefathers had when they threw off the shackles of the King, or fought their own kin in the Civil War.

That's because they correlate fascism with the right, not the left, where it belongs.

It’s like we live in alternative universes.

WE live in the reality of God's good universe. We remember who our Creator is. We worship and thank Him daily with word and deed.

THEY live in the Twilight Zone of Rod Serling...music please.

Your children will be fine because YOU brought them up right.

Our rich, spoiled country will survive because it will EVER-morph. HOWEVER, it's my contention that it will morph for the better IF we stay close to God in thought, word and deed. THAT'S the only way we stay on the right path.

I am amazed how easily young people submit to authority.

I am amazed how easily young people submit to authority.

That is an excellent point. They are indoctrinated in our public schools.

TexasFreeper talked about the leftie websites - I think they are part of the generation that just believes what it is told. Critical thinking is NOT taught in schools, but blind obedience is. I think the current teachers are just obeying the masters that they were taught from.

I had a surprising discussion with 2 high schoolers recently. They were adamant that Reagan had nothing to do with the dissolution of the Soviet empire. It was Gorbachev that did it. For unknown reasons. They couldn't even explain how he did it. But they believed their history book, without even being able to explain the details. These were AP students!

There really is no hope after the older folks are gone. The revolution/CW needs to happen now in order to rebuild with any sense of purpose and understanding of the Constitution/Founding Fathers.

BTW, I am of the opinion that textbooks change every few years for a reason - not just to charge schools $150 a book. But that history is being re-written, one revision at a time. So that the parents don't notice.

Even in the USSR, the people knew they were lied to. Here, most don't even see it. That is scariest of all.

I believe it was Jonah Goldberg where I learned how this came about. A significant part of the US Left were Nazi-friendly before 1941 and the German invasion of the USSR. After all, the Nazis were allies of the Soviets until then, they had dismembered Poland together and split it between them. And much of our Left of that time were following the marching orders of the Soviets.

After the war, our Left needed to distance themselves from that history, and did it by labeling the Right as Fascist. None of them can give a logical answer as to how totalitarian National Socialists are of the Right in a US political sense. But, sadly, the big lie works.

That's to keep their soldiers on their toes, motivated and fighting their guerrilla war. We in the Center-Right just shrug our shoulders, mutter something about trouble brewin', and go back to watching O'Reilly. Sooner rather than later there will be changes happening that we can't turn a blind eye to...and when that happens, it'll be too late.

Scouts Out! Cavalry Ho!
