Baby Born Prematurely When Her Mum Was Struck by Lightning Still Has Static Hair One Year Later
Metro UK ^

Her parents call her their ‘little Flash Gordon’ after she miraculously survived an emergency C-section when her mum was struck by lightning last July.

One-year-old Kimberly Gordon amazingly survived the lightning bolt which hit her mum during an Independence Day fireworks display in New Mexico, but has had permanently static hair ever since.

Dad, Ian Gordon, told ABC News that his girlfriend, Kendra Villanueva, was two weeks from her due date when the couple – and their unborn baby – were hit with the bolt from the blue during a rainstorm.

Kimberly Gordon was in the womb when her mother Kendra Villanueva was struck by lightning on July 4 last year Villanueva was rushed to hospital for an emergency C-section Kimberly, one, is lucky to be alive, but can't sit up, crawl or digest food Doctors said only 11 pregnant women on record have been struck by lightning, with only half of newborns surviving.

It is believed the thunderbolt went through Gordon’s ear (blowing out his eardrum) before jumping to Kendra’s body and leaving through her thumb.

The couple were rushed to the University of New Mexico Hospital, where Kendra was induced and gave birth to baby Kimberly.

Just over a year on, Kimberly still has neurological damage from the lightning strike. She can’t sit up, crawl or digest food properly. Doctors admit they don’t know when she’ll start to walk and talk and have no idea why her hair is still static.

But, Ian and Kendra are just hugely relieved she survived the shock. ‘Everybody we’ve seen says it’s a miracle she’s alive,’ Ian says. ‘She’s just kind of a play-it-by ear baby.’

The emergency medical technician who treated the couple reportedly told them that there have only been 11 incidents on record ever of a pregnant woman getting struck by lightning. Of those 11, he said that only half of the newborns survived.

‘Somebody’s definitely watching out for us,’ says Ian, who now harbours hopes that his miracle mini ‘Flash Gordon’ will grow up to ‘run fast, or save the universe’.

Well, she’s already got superhero hair.

Wow — never heard of this sort of phenomenon.

The older I get, the more wary I am about lightning. The randomness of it all sort of freaks me out.

C’mon...The hair may be wild but surely it can be corralled with a hair twist....whatever they’re called.

The hair is kind of funny but the rest of her problems are not - can’t sit up, crawl or even digest food. I can’t imagine what they do about that.

Still, she looks happy and she obviously has family around her. Lightning damage is very strange but I have heard of odd cases where people suddenly recover, sometimes after another electrical shock or traumatic event.

How is that possible? I mean static is a surface charge and if you ground out on something metal the static electricity should discharge. Does this little girl maintain some sort of internal polarity that attracts static electricity? I feel bad for her but this is kind of fascinating from an electricel theory standpoint.

“How is that possible?”

It isn’t. And it would discharge... Her hair may be wild, but it’s not from a non-discharging electrical charge. Body fluids are made up of conductive electrolytes. A bath would discharge it.

Her hair reminds me of that dude and his funny hair that a few Freepers have posted with the caption “Aliens”. I don’t know his name but pretty much as her style. LOL

The story that got me was a woman walking to a diner from her car. This happened in a pretty suburban part of nj not in a really open area. She was killed.

A few years ago there was a story here of an 8 or 10 yr old kid walking his bike up the driveway to his suburban house. It was a mostly clear day, but a dark cloud was passing nearby and somehow there was a random bolt of lightning that struck and killed the boy. Crazy stuff. I don’t want to be “one of those people” that gets freaked out by unusual events, but sometimes I think I might be.... well, you know... “one of those people.” LOL
