Got knocked flat and soaked with unburnt fuel one time from an F-18 on afterburner...nothing like being held flat on the ground and sprayed with exhaust. Leaves you vibrating all over. :)

He was with 3rd battalion, 26th Marines. I joined 3/26 right after they left Khe Sanh to become a Battalion Landing Team (BLT) operating off an amphibious group.

Y’all did a magnificent job at Khe Sanh. In March of ‘69, we’d hear Hanoi Hannah say “You Marines of Lima Co., 3rd battalion, 26th Marines will pay for your crimes at Khe Sanh!” then she go on to say that so-and-so’s girlfriend was sleeping with his best buddy, and she’d get all the names correct. The guy she named was sitting right across from me, hearing this. Weird! Must have been a lost mailbag or some hippie in his hometown feeding info. He swore that he burned his letters after reading.

Met some 3/26 guys when I was sent out to

C2 FB to set up some antennas and generators

for a Marine unit there.Heck there was some

Navy guys there for some reason.

Had about forgot about Hanoi Hannah..listened

a few times..it was kinda funny radio.

Always admired you Marines.

Remember being in the induction center and this

nco saying we need 5 guys to volunteer Marines.

I got as small as possible. No volunteers so he

picked out his men and I breathed a sigh of relief.

Wished later I had volunteered.

The Marine Corps was one of the better decisions I’ve made...both times.

Thank you for your service, too. Without Comm, we’re back to semaphore and runners carrying a note in a split stick!

Before I went to 3/26 I was with Systems Control, Comm Company, HQ BN, 1st MarDiv in Da Nang. With 3/26 I started as a field radio operator humping a PRC-25 on an 81mm mortar FO team then ended up with the FO ‘s job once he rotated home.

Long time ago...galaxy far, far away....

:-)
