CLEVELAND - The red block letter C for Cleveland seems to be replacing Chief Wahoo outside Progressive Field. But not everyone sees it that way.
Robert Roche is the director of the American Indian Education Center and one of the plaintiffs planing to file a federal lawsuit in late July against the Cleveland Indians.
The group says the team's name and the Chief Wahoo logo are racist.
The group wants a lot of money to help Native Americans with education, job training and housing.
"We're going to be asking for $9 billion and we're basing it on a hundred years of disparity, racism, exploitation and profiteering," Roche said.

We’re under attack, and we’re not fighting. There are enough angry men in this country that we could put a stop to this tomorrow.

In order to win a defamation action, the plaintiff must establish that he was indeed defamed and that the objectionable symbol (in this case) was the proximate cause of the injury.
So tell me how Chief Wahoo defames anyone? Where is the injury? Being offended is not the same as having one’s standing or reputation diminished. If anything, Chief Wahoo elevates the reputation of Indians by equating them to noble fighters and staunch champions.
Cleveland should charge the Indians for the advertising.

Another component of a successful defamation settlement is that the judgment will make a material contribution to remediating the injury. How is giving a bunch of drunken rez-dwellers truckloads of money going to erase this imaginary “damage?”
This case should be summarily dismissed.

Usage, to a great degree, makes language. They’re Indians all right. American Indians.

Native Americans are the ones who are exempt from laws about deliberately killing eagles, right?
All cultures are equal. Some are more equal than others...
