From Oklahoma to Louisiana: Why states are dropping Common Core
foxnews.com ^ | June 21, 2014 | Kyle Olson

When Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin signed a bill repealing Common Core national standards from her state’s schools, it was perhaps the most ironic moment in the fight over the initiative.

Fallin is chairwoman of the National Governors Association, one of the private groups that hold the copyright of Common Core. (Yes, this marks the first time in history a private group has owned school standards.)

While Fallin wasn’t governor at the time the standards were created and adopted, she nonetheless rejected her own organization’s initiative.

In the same week, South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley signed a bill to repeal Common Core and require the state to design its own standards for the 2015-2016 school year.

Indiana has repealed Common Core, too, though the replacement standards are largely seen as a disappointment because they virtually mirror the national standards.

Legislation is also making its way through the North Carolina legislature that would repeal Common Core there, as well.

“We want high standards. If there are pieces or components of Common Core that you think are age appropriate, they can take those individual pieces, but as a whole … we want more rigorous standards,” bill sponsor Rep. Bryan Holloway said.

In Oklahoma, after signing the bill, Fallin said, “Common Core was created with that well-intentioned goal in mind. ... It was originally designed as a state-led – not federal – initiative that each state could choose to voluntarily adopt.

“Unfortunately, federal overreach has tainted Common Core. President Obama and Washington bureaucrats have usurped Common Core in an attempt to influence state education standards. The results are predictable. What should have been a bipartisan policy is now widely regarded as the president’s plan to establish federal control of curricula, testing and teaching strategies.”

Rats. I forgot to put (ObamaCore) in the title. This association needs to be encouraged. Possible to still add it?

If a foreign power imposed Common Core on our children, we would regard it as an act of war.

I watched a 2 hour video on it - fantastic information. One example was a writing prompt from the test that asked the students to explain why the state is just like a family only better. Oh yeah. Some people “objected” to that and got it pulled. Mustn’t be too obvious now, must we?

Wish we were getting rid of it here in Georgia. Unfortunately, Republican voters here just re-nominated the same Republican who stuck us with Common Core to begin with. And these same Republican voters defeated the one State School Superintendent candidate who vowed to trash it. We suffer from our own low-info voter problems. And the state GOP loves it.

List of States that have adopted it or not.

Alaska - non-member
Indiana - formally withdrawn
Nebraska - not adopted
Oklahoma - repealed
South Carolina - repealed
Texas - non-member
Virginia - non-member

Alabama - Adopted, but state school board voted to rescind the agreement that commits the state to adoption. However, state standards are still aligned with Common Core standards.

Kansas - formally adopted it, but defunding legislation passed Senate, narrowly failed in House in July 2013.

Louisiana formally adopted it but governor signed executive order to withdraw state from PARCC assessment program.(June, 2014).

Missouri - formally adopted, but legislature delayed Common Core testing for two years in June 2014, pending governor’s signature. Work groups to be created to develop new standards, which may result in re-adoption of Common Core.

North Carolina working on repeal.

Ohio - formally adopted; legislation filed to bar adoption in House in November 2013.

Federal $$$...

States need to start working on becoming financially independent from the feds. In the long run, they'd (we'd) be better off.

Somewhere a progressive liberal is crying, sad that their fantasy of brainwashing students with Agenda 21 concepts may not succeed in their state.

Excellent article! Too bad it had to be excerpted. Go read it.

Statement from Fallin:

IMHO the first word should have been Fortunately.

President Obama and Washington bureaucrats are doing exactly what they planned with Common Core... more take over.

They control your healthcare. With the EPA running wild, they will soon control your indoor temperature. It just makes sense that they would place this into the government indoctrination centers. And they did it so quietly. They want to control your kids' minds. Fill their brains full of Marxist mush.

Went to our local GOP meeting months ago with State Senator Tyler Harper (Or Rep) and he was all for it but could not go into any real detail on it, When I did he said it was all lies and supported it 100%. Several others at the meeting seen right through him but as you say too many just accept status quo! Never Give Up, Never Surrender, Just approach for different angles until you Succeed...

God Bless

The real question that no one is addressing. Did they get rid of the national data base that common core initially put in place. It’s not about common core. . .it is the data trove that is available (early childhood through career) on students, family.
