On television at least, it looks as if the beat doesnt go on. The phenomenon of music-based television shows, which have dominated the ratings for more than a decade, seems by nearly every measure to be over or in steep decline.
They flooded the market, said Simon Cowell, perhaps the individual most responsible for turning amateur singers into superstars, with his roles on American Idol, The X Factor and Americas Got Talent. There have just been a ton of shows, and something has simply gone awry.

As for Idol, last years panel was the death knell. The show became about them and not the singers, and the singers have not been of the star quality of the past.
Somehow they got off track and preferred diversity to talent, and it killed the shows.
Oh where will the Democrat Party turn to find gay candidates now?
Trends in TV come and go. I’m old enough to remember when there were lots of westerns on TV. When was the last time you saw a western on scheduled network prime time TV?
I never got into these reality competition shows. They had a good run, but, if people tire of them, ratings plunge, and the shows go off the air. That’s just how TV works.
Its like everything else. If you oversaturate the market, people will eventually get bored with it.
Finally.
The current talent shows are turture. They show the life history of each performer over and over. Then the three or four judges say the same thing after every performance. I tape them to fast forward to view just the performances. It’s time for a new Ed Sullivan show.
It’s all gay now.
Nobody knows obsolescence like the NYT.
Good. What took them so long?
People are getting sick of glorified karaoke.
Interesting. I am surprised Idol has sunk lower this year, because I know plenty of people who a hooked this year and tuned out last year. I actually like this year better than any in recent years.
For the Voice, the talent is miles better than Idol. I’d say the top 10 year are all as good or better than the top 2 in Idol.
The Voice would be wise to go back to once a year. It’s hard to keep up with a whole season, especially when one begins on the heels of the last.
No kiiding, at least Cowell would tell the awful singers they were awful. These new panalists tell eveyone their great, no losers, talk about PC.
I liked it better back when it was called, “The Gong Show.”
I am sad that you know that ;)
Exactly.
What I always found ridiculous about these shows is that they had absolutely no point to them whatsoever. It was like having a contest to find people who like to eat. Good singers are a dime a dozen, not even - they’re a half a penny a billion, they’re more common than table salt, so why the F would you hold a contest to find good singers? Are these people living on another planet where they think there is this massive shortage of singers? It’s utter ridiculous and useless. And then the “winners” get to sing this horrible song written by some no talent hack. The songs are horrible, but let’s not focus on the songwriting, let’s instead focus on flooding the market with more singers. Let’s keep pumping out drivers but ignore making cars.
Case in point are those "home makeover" shows in which a family is sent on vacation while their homes are remodeled. Without fail, the family's reaction is the exact same. Tears of joy and people gushing "OMG, OMG, OMG" over and over again as they are led through their remodeled house. It's so apparent that the family was coached ahead of time that it's insulting to the intelligence to sit through it.
The only reality show I like to watch is probably the first one ever made. It's the show "COPS" and it is still in production today, after 25 years. At least that one appears to have some authenticity, although I do tire of the routine where the cops are asked why they decided to become cops. Just show the me the car chases, the domestic disturbances and the K-9 dogs, etc.
I'll second that. At least the Gong Show featured non-singing acts.
I think the point is to get bored people to watch so they can sell ratings.
A bigger problem is that none of the 18-40 y/o’s I know watch TV. The may do on demand or more likely Hulu or Roku programs off the Net when they have time. Us old farts are the only ones who watch TV anymore and we time shift most shows on our DVRs. But nobody wants our demographic so they lament the loss of those who don’t watch their precious commercials laden programs.
