Dogs and cats, historically, have been people's property like a couch or a toaster. But as they've moved into our houses and our hearts, courts of law have begun to treat them as something more. They can inherit your estate, get an appointed lawyer if your relatives challenge that inheritance and are protected from cruel acts. Your toaster can't do any of that.
As these animals inch closer to citizen's rights, the trend is being watched with worried eyes by biomedical researchers who fear judges could extend these rights to lab animals like monkeys and rats, thereby curbing experimentation.

Welcome to insanity, I repsect animals but they are not humans and this comes form those that approve abortion and legal suicide.
If animals have rights, they also have duties. When congress finds a way to make animals obey laws and pay taxes, I might listen to this talk about “animal rights.”
The left considers babies, unborn and born, as property.

I know. I head the foundation that issues those cards.
1) The species must be self aware and be able to communicate that awareness.
2) The species must be able to cognitively understand the right and communicate that right, at least to other members of its species.
3) The species must, at least in general, respect the rights of other species that meet requirements 1 & 2.
The closest other species that might fulfill these criteria are the Cetaceans (dolphins & whales).

Unfortunately, pregnant pigs have rights in Florida. Florida Constitutional Amendment 10. My question is how do we know if a pig is pregnant and not just fat? Shouldn’t there be a Florida pig pregnancy testing agency to make sure that pregnant pigs don’t have their rights violated? Although it seems its just easier for pig farmers to shut down their pig farms or move them out of state with a resulting loss of jobs and revenue base. Local animal rights advocates sqeal (like a stuck pig) with joy, claiming a victory as the farms close and/or move. It’s insanity.
