VAN NUYS (CBSLA.com) — A man reportedly died Sunday from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest at an indoor firing range in the San Fernando Valley.

The incident occurred around 2:25 p.m. on the 16100 block of Cohasset Street, in Van Nuys, according to LAPD Officer Rosario Herrera. Police have not identified the location but a business called The Target Range is located at 16140 Cohasset.

Police say the man was in his 50s. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.

No further details were immediately available.

I thought that it was usually women that shot themselves in the chest, so as not to mar their features. Sad that he felt this was his only recourse, sadder yet to inflict his passing on innocents using the range.

Never point your weapon at anything you don’t wish to destroy.
Always be sure of your target and what is behind it.
Don’t place your finger on the trigger until ready to shoot.
Try not to hold your gun backwards.

Try not to hold your gun backwards.

That's good advice ...

It’s very cruel to inflict the emotional pain that comes from witnessing the after-effect of a suicide on innocent bystanders. There’s no good way to do it, but privacy would be better.

It’s a shame that anyone would feel like suicide is the best option. My great uncle committed suicide in 1981, and that pain is still felt to this day.

In my small town we’ve had a couple of suicides in the parking lot right behind the Funeral Home. That seems slightly more considerate than at the shooting range.

I remember seeing them hosing the blood off once a long time ago. Plus, the JP’s office is right across the street.

As Drill Sergeants are wont to say:

Keep your weapons pointed up and down range at all times.
