Barack Obama's first visit to Brussels to cost Belgium more than ($12M)

As Belgium's capital and host to the EU and Nato, Brussels is used to deploying heavy security when big names pop by. But US President Barack Obama's visit on Tuesday will strain the city like never before with €10m (£8.4m) of Belgian money being spent to cover his 24 hours in the country.

The president will arrive on Tuesday night with a 900-strong entourage, including 45 vehicles and three cargo planes. Advance security teams orchestrating every last detail have combed Brussels already, checking the sewers and the major hospitals, while American military helicopters were last week given the green light for overflights. The city hosts at least four EU summits a year, with each of these gatherings costing €500,000 in extra police, military and transport expenses. "But this time round, you can multiply that figure by 20," said Brussels mayor, Yvan Mayeur.

900 person entourage, 45 vehicles, 3 cargo planes not including Air Force 1!!! OMG, is there any limit to what this guy will spend on his trips??? Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, Empress Michelle, her daughters and mother enjoy an $8500 per night suite in Beijing. Their military version of a 757 sits on the tarmac waiting for the call to take them anywhere they want to go, also at our expense.

A couple of years ago, Belgium did without a government for almost a year. They may decide to try that again after seeing the obscene amount of government excess that is descending on them from the US.

I don’t understand why he needs 900 people with him. I don’t remember other presidents being this bad. Even slice Willy didn’t bring this many with him

They are stupid to host Obama under these conditions. He does not have to be included in meetings, rather he can receive a video recording of the meeting.

Another thing foreign destination areas for can do for the President’s visits, is to give them a meager but normal budget, and let Obama fund the difference with the White or State Department budget. It’s like King Tut is making a tour. How embarrassing.
