Study to Test Chocolate Pills for Heart Health
NBC Bay Area ^ | Monday, Mar 17, 2014 | Marilynn Marchione

It won't be nearly as much fun as eating candy bars, but a big study is being launched to see if pills containing the nutrients in dark chocolate can help prevent heart attacks and strokes.

The pills are so packed with nutrients that you'd have to eat countless candy bars to get the amount being tested in this study, which will enroll 18,000 men and women across the U.S.

``People eat chocolate because they enjoy it,'' not because they think it's good for them, and the idea of the study is to see whether there are health benefits from chocolate's ingredients minus the sugar and fat, said Dr. JoAnn Manson, preventive medicine chief at Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.

View it as an Rx version of M&Ms.

I’ll risk dying and eat candy barsw. I’m dying for a hot fudge sundae right now or a root beer float. But it’s freezin’ outside here in this wonderful hole known as Upstate NY and I don’t want to go out.

I’d like a pan of that dark Hershey fudge...the old recipe...the one on the dark brown can.

``People eat chocolate because they enjoy it,'' not because they think it's good for them...

Not true. I eat chocolate because I enjoy it. I eat MORE chocolate because it's good for me. I eat STILL MORE in order to keep the dragons away.

You're welcome.

When you dine/feed daily on great tasting and fresh Pacific Ocean Salmon, Halibut, Artic cod, Dungeness Crabs, elk, venison, good California Red Wine and/or micro beer, home grown arugula, kale and tomatoes, locally baked whole wheat bread along with good coffee and Dark Chocolate.

You don’t care if the rabid liberal vegans, who run marathons and are constantly starving themselves, live a few more miserable months in a hospice. You are enjoying life while they torture themselves until they die.

Sounds like a great way to take care of ourselves.

No, and there are two things that are known to keep them away: beer and chocolate. Show me a place that has beer and chocolate AND dragons.

I'm doing this for all of humanity. Here, have a Kit-Kat.

Same with garlic here. And it keeps dragons AND vampires away.

I’m a hyper-taster and can’t handle the dark chocolate. However, having the ingredients in a pill might be a great way around that (along with a regular Hershey’s chocolate bar for the taste).

Chocolate chips are a great snack. Keep a container near the remote.
