Remembering a great Irishman on St. Patrick's Day

Every St. Patrick's Day, I give some extra thought to one of the few people I consider to be a true "Sports Hero," a phrase far too often overused.

Joey Dunlop was one of the greatest motorcycle road racers ever, and while he was granted the MBE for his incredible accomplishments on the TT courses around the world, especially the Isle of Mann TT, he was granted the OBE for his humanitarian work, something he quietly did, without looking for recognition.

Joey was willing to put his life on the line, delivering supplies to orphanages in Eastern Europe, usually alone, and sometimes under direct fire. On more than one occasion, Joey would find bullet holes in his van upon his return to Northern Ireland.

Joey died in 2000, during a TT race in Estonia.

I wish St. Patrick would go to “we the people” white house and drive the snakes out of it.
