A Northern California couple out walking their dog on their property stumbled across a modern-day bonanza: $10 million in rare, mint-condition gold coins buried in the shadow of an old tree.

Nearly all of the 1,427 coins, dating from 1847 to 1894, are in uncirculated, mint condition, said David Hall, co-founder of Professional Coin Grading Service of Santa Ana, which recently authenticated them.

Although the face value of the gold pieces only adds up to more than $28,000, some of them are so rare that coin experts say they could fetch nearly $1 million apiece.

Was there a rainbow the day they found it? If so, I know who it belongs to.

It sure peaks the curiosity as to who buried and lost $28k worth of gold coins which was no small amount if it was close to the date of the newest coin of 1894.

“Nearly all of the 1,427 coins, dating from 1847 to 1894, are in uncirculated, mint condition, “

Really? Found buried in a can and they are uncirculated?
Seems to me they were circulated a bit before someone STUFFED them in a can and buried them.
Maybe they were still in the US Mint plastic packaging. Nope, they are WAY older than that invention/S

It would save a few million in taxes to move to Florida before selling those coins.

Apparently both private and Amazon.com.

About 90 percent of the coins will post on Amazon.com’s Collectibles
site, probably in May, Kagin said. The rest he will sell privately,
“to well-heeled collectors who desire the finest and the rarest.”

"Some people need to learn to STFU>"

I hear that the best thing to do in these situations is to bury the coins in a can in your backyard.
