LOS ANGELES — Judy Shepard will be in Denver on Thursday night, about a two-hour drive from where her son, Matt, was brutally murdered in a gay hate crime 16 years ago.
The Nets also will be in Denver on Thursday for their game against the Nuggets, and Judy says she has a warm welcome for Jason Collins if they cross paths.

“I’m just happy for him. It’s wonderful that he’s playing again. I’d tell him thank you and give him a big hug. I have not met him but everyone I know that has has said he’s a gentleman, kind and generous. I’d like very much to thank him and congratulate him.”
Collins plans to wear No. 98 starting Wednesday against the Trail Blazers, a tribute to Matthew Shepard, who was killed in 1998 because he was gay. The brutal nature of Matt’s murder — he was beaten, tortured and left to die hanging on a fence — and the conviction of two men developed into a “watershed moment for the gay community,” as Judy explained, and a “wakeup call” to the rest of America that led to changes in hate crime legislation.

As gay journalist Aaron Hicklin, writing in The Advocate asks, “How do people sold on one version of history react to being told that the facts are slippery -— that thinking of Shepard’s murder as a hate crime does not mean it was a hate crime? And how does it color our understanding of such a crime if the perpetrator and victim not only knew each other but also had sex together, bought drugs from one another, and partied together?”
This startling revelation comes in The Book of Matt to be published next week by investigative journalist Stephen Jiminez, who over the course of years interviewed over 100 people including Shepard’s friends, friends of the killers, and the killers themselves.

Collins said he has planned at least one act of gay pride and symbolism. He will wear No. 98 as a tribute to Matthew Shepard, a University of Wyoming student who died in an anti-gay hate crime in 1998. The Nets couldn’t accommodate him for Sunday’s game, but Collins said the uniform should be ready for Wednesday night at Portland.
“Life is so much better for me. I don’t have to hide who I am,” Collins said when asked how his life has changed since coming out. “I can just be my normal self. The past 10 months have been incredible. A lot of really cool experiences. Meeting new friends. Hearing different people’s stories. Sharing experiences. It was just really overall positive.
“Be your true authentic self,” Collins added when asked what advice he has for young gay athletes. “Never have fear or shame in it.”
