9 old-time cures doctors swear by

Medical offices might have gone high-tech, but some of the advice you'll hear there these days rings more nostalgic: Complain of constipation or congestion and you may get an Rx for dried plums (née prunes) or a saltwater gargle.

"The more that old remedies pan out in studies, the more likely physicians are to suggest them," said Dr. Philip Hagen, vice chair of the division of preventive medicine at Mayo Clinic. "Part of the drive is the cost of health care—trying these at home could save you a trip to the doctor." Consider these golden oldies the next time you're feeling under the weather.

Onions boiled in milk. For colds.

Grandma Anderson swore by it. Kinda faded from the family pharmacopeia after she passed.

I had a knee replacement last April. Sometimes the post surgical pain was so much that my pain meds wouldn’t touch it. I found that Aspercreme rubbed on the scar worked better than the narcotics they were giving me at rehab.

Wet tobacco slapped on bee/wasp stings takes the pain out and neutralizes the poison. I keep a can of Skoal in our First Aid kit.

Handed down in our family from our Cherokee Great Grandmother.

the list recommends 12!

I think we are going to enter a new era of minimalist health care interventions...not just because of obamanocare, but because every single medicine you take has its downside, sometimes serious...

and for most aches and pains and joint problems, rest, ice, heat, losing weight in the long run, and use of aspirin or similar is probably just as affective as weeks of physical therapy or surgery....

I use ginger pills and tea for nausea and sick sickness and it works for me.

Gave some to my parents and it worked for them.

MythBusters checked it out and confirmed it works for seasickness.

Pepto Bismol

It’s like a miracle drug for anything stomach related, I was shocked when I got married and my wife and never used it and still resists using it for some unknown reason.

My mother had us kids swallow a little Vicks Vapor Rub when we had bad chest congestion, in addition to putting on the outside of the chest. I survived, but looking back, that may have been a bit overboard. LOL.

We went through a period in the ‘60’s when practically every woman was on some kind of depressant. (I can’t recall the one, but I think “Valley of the Dolls” described the age.) I agree people will be using fewer medications. I was using four quality of life type meds that in 2012 cost $80/script for generic. In January 2013 they went to $230-280 each for generic. I asked why and the pharmacist said, “Obamacare.” It hadn’t even kicked in yet. She said they’d raised prices to even out the losses they’d have in 2014.

If I ate 12 prunes I’d never leave the house again. I’d just be a hollow skin bag perched on the toilet.

My family didn’t do the salt water gargle, but Mom would take 4 or 5 Bayer Aspirins, dissolve them in warm water and make us gargle. When gargling, we would let a little bit of the warm water trickle down our throats. Good temporary relief for sire throats.

These days with the coatings and what not, I don’t know if you can dissolve aspirin in water.

Got a sore throat? I will swear by gargling a cup of warm water mixed with with a 1/4 cup of apple cider vinegar. Two gargle sessions and gone. Much more effective than salt water.

DManA “Are six too many?”
Six are too many. Trust me.

The article says twelve per day. Twelve per day is Double Plus Ungood.

I remember getting three prunes as a kid (probably as punishment for some horrible misdeed), and three were too many.

"Dried Plums" sound so much better.

And ribs and asparagus and ice cream.

Works on body, mind and soul.
