ABQ mayor issues warning on ‘COPS’
The Albuquerque Journal ^ | February 19, 2014 | Dan McKay

Posted on 02/19/2014 4:08:29 PM PST by CedarDave

Mayor Richard Berry can’t keep the “COPS” television crews out of the Albuquerque area.

But he made it clear on Tuesday that he doesn’t want to see the city’s name, its officers or its neighborhoods on the show.

Producers can also forget about help from Albuquerque’s film office.

City attorneys fired off letters Tuesday to Bernalillo County Sheriff Dan Houston and Langley Productions Inc. to make the city’s position clear.

It has been more than a decade since “COPS” was filmed in Albuquerque and Bernalillo County.

Then-Albuquerque Mayor Martin Chávez banned “COPS” from working with APD in 2001, and Berry has continued that ban.

But Houston announced the return of “COPS” last week and said it would be a good way to show off the excellent work of deputies. Langley Productions is the production house behind “COPS,” which airs episodes on Spike TV.

The mayor said the show unfairly presents the worst of communities and Albuquerque should be showing off its positives. He further said “What’s filmed on ‘COPS’ happens in every community.”

Heck, anyone outside the city can go online to view the ABQ Journal to get the latest news which includes plenty of criminal incidents.

What presents NM in a bad light are videos of police shooting at a car full of kids at a traffic stop (State Police outside Taos) or shooting and killing a woman who drove away after the officer performed the PIT maneuver (State Police again). If the series instead shows stopping bad guys and using proper police tactics to subdue them, it won't hurt the state's image.

I think Mayor Marty banned it because it showed everyone that East Central Avenue has the ugliest whores in the world.

Criminal stupidity = timeless entertainment.

(That is, when you are not the victim.)

Deming? They’d have to change the theme song.

“Bad Cows Bad Cows, what ‘chu gonna do, when they come round milkin’ on you.”

It is entertaining to watch fleeing low-IQ perps trip when their silly pants prevent them from running fast and/or trip them. Those pants certainly make the cops’ job easier.

Yeah, wouldn't want a TV show giving Albuquerque a negative image.

Yes, still on the air after all these years. I could watch that show for hours and never get bored. I just wish they'd cut the part when do that scripted banter in the squad car about why so-and-so decided to become a police officer.

There are three things that must happen in every COPS episode:

Hey, that formula has worked for 25 years! Why stop now?

My favorite quote from the show, "What I do?!"

Do you ever watch “Bait Car”, I think it takes place in a few places but mostly I’ve seen Atlanta. The cops have these special cars, very nice, and they leave them places with the keys in them. Invariably somebody comes along and takes the car (I’m not sure what these people are thinking, ever) and then the cops can stop the car and lock the doors by remote control.

Some of the theives are a little wise to their ways now, and they’ll drive the car with the door open a little, so they don’t get locked in.

It can be be pretty amusing.

That sounds like a great subject for a TV show! I will check it out. Is the “bait car” what the police were doing all along or was it the idea of a reality TV producer?
