If they want to be called Latinos, they should speak Latin. Americans could then learn Latin if they wanted to talk to them, a language with a richer cultural tradition than Spanish. Some of the greatest Spanish writers wrote in Latin anyway—Seneca, Lucan, Isidore of Seville.

The massive invasion of the U.S. by Mexicans and Central Americans (but Mexicans, primarily) has created two nations within the borders of the U., because the invaders have absolutely no desire or intent to assimilate and become Americans.

The U.S. is becoming Balkanized, and to a degree that will be a carbon copy of the break-up of Yugoslavia a couple decades ago.

I blame the insanity of neo-liberalism and its willing enablers in government and the media and the schools. When the SHTF, we’ll all know who to hold accountable.

Exactly.

No one ever pressed '1' for Polish, German, Norwegian, Italian, or any other language, why should we cater to the people who came here Illegally when we didn't cater thus to those who followed the rules?

Spanish is the language of poverty, crime, backwardness, ignorance and dependency.I could be convinced to learn German...French...Japanese....even Mandarin or Cantonese.

But *never* Spanish.

At the close of the Mexican-American War —in the lands ceeded to the USA—all Mexican Citizens in those lands were made US citizens and all legal papers and newspapers were to be in both English and Spanish. In truth Spanish has been the Second Language for the USA since 1848. Because of our low birthrate—we need these Illegals! In the 22nd Century a majority may well speak Spanish and not English. Those Americans who go to Mars may well do it in Spanish. Its not that bad folks—it could be Arabic—like in Europe! Spain would be smart to replace their population with people from Mexico and Argentina rather than North Africa.

Not only should Spanish be banned in any official capacity but its private use should be relentlessly castigated in American society as it was up until the 1980s.

This article and the continuing push by the Left are just radical attempts to undermine and subjugate the American nation. It is sedition pushed by a vengeful and criminal populace, bent on colonizing the U.S., nothing more.

I agree 100%. Sowell and VDH would agree too. A country cannot survive unless the people speak a common language. Sowell and Hanson have spoken on this.

I am one not who believes in creating law after law, but I would like to see a Constitutional amendment proposed that states that only English shall be used in commerce and public matters.

I despise going into evil Lowes and seeing spainish on equal footing in English. I am sure some far left lowes official was beside himself when he pushed having everything bi-lingual.

Our Republic will not survive unless the vast majority of illegals are rounded up and deported with a lifetime ban on ever returning.

The third world illegal scum average about a 3rd grade education, love activist liberal government, are very anti-capitalist and have NO intention or learning English. The females start reproducing at about 12-13 years of age and have 4-6 kids.

Our Republic absolutely cannot survive such cultural destruction that such hoards are bringing upon this land.

"If I listen to Spanish as spoken by a professional (e.g. a radio or TV announcer) I can understand it pretty well. If I overhear a couple of the illegals I see now and then in the neighborhood, I have trouble following the conversation (there’s lots of slang and plenty of poor enunciation)."

LOL! I know exactly what you mean. The problem I find is that most Mexicans have a horrible habit of slurring everything and sometimes, it's even like a twang from a West Virginian chewing tobacco. Colombian and Bolivians seem to have the purest accents, but maybe that's just my ear.

It can work both ways though. Once in Playa de Carmen I ran across a young fellow in a car rental agency who had a perfect valley-girl accent. I assumed he grew up in California, but he told me that he learned English from some tapes titled "Lets Speak English".

Concur with the article in generation. Multiple language capability will help careers especially when dealing with the public.

All living Romance languages are derived from the vulgar or common Latin. The literary Latin of Rome - nowadays a dead language, was mainly used for writing and official communication. It was considered artificial by common Latin speakers.

After the collapse of the Roman Empire in the 5th Century, the various vulgar Latin dialects in the Dark Ages diverged at an accelerating rate to become the various national languages of Latin Europe. The Western Romance languages are Spanish, Portuguese, French and Italian. The Eastern Romance language is Romanian.

They are mutually intelligible to a limited extent but the speakers of one language won’t understand anything of another language beyond news headlines and a few simple words without a through study of the grammar and vocabulary of the language they wish to understand. It should be noted that Spanish and Portuguese today have more speakers in the New World than they do in Europe.

translate the article to spanish and say why “you need to learn english”

how many states have english as the official language? there is a map somewhere.

this is just dividing the nation by balkanizing languages.
