Experimental Treatment Could Reduce Kids’ Peanut Allergies
New York Daily News ^ | THURSDAY, JANUARY 30, 2014

In a recent study, kids with severe peanut allergies were fed small amounts of peanut flour to build their tolerance. After the experiment, 80% could safely eat five peanuts at a time. Doctors say the goal isn’t to allow the kids to eat large amounts of peanuts, but to avoid life-threatening reactions if they unknowingly ingest traces of peanuts.

An experimental therapy that fed children with peanut allergies small amounts of peanut flour has helped more than 80 percent of them safely eat a handful of the previously worrisome nuts.

Although experts say the results of the carefully monitored study are encouraging, they warn it isn't something that parents should try at home.

Now me being quite a cynic will say that there are going to be a considerable number of parents who will not accept this for what can only be described as selfish reasons.

Makes sense. That’s how allergists treat other allergies.

Either all the kids with peanut allergies died before kindergarten when I was growing up or this is a new phenomena.

I’m scratching my head. Why is this “experimental”? This should have been tried at the very beginning of these weird allergy.

Recently I read another posting about pregnant women should eat nuts and that would lessen the child’s chances of becoming allergic to them. That made sense to me.

I’m wondering - was there some stupid scientific study years ago that said young kiddies shouldn’t eat peanuts? Or pregnant women shouldn’t eat peanuts?

....just as there was no kids with ADHD.

So no previously unknown brain function can ever be discovered? Is this one illegitimate because it's a relatively new (in the past 20 years or so) finding?

There's nothing fake about ADHD. I've dealt with it for years.

“This should have been tried at the very beginning of these weird allergy.”

I think the trick is how to process the peanut flour.

Previous attempts at building up a tolerance were not successful. Frequently with peanut allergy, a tiny dose can make one MORE sensitive to the next dose, the opposite of pollen or insect sting allergies.

Believe me people have been working this problem for quite a while. Like Epi-Pens, epinephrine injectors, the same as the military uses for nerve gas but with a different payload. They simply were not available in 1970, back then you gave the patient a steroid and antihistamine and hoped that the reaction was not too severe, while you waited 20 minutes for the pills to dissolve. Ana-Kits were first, with a little two shot needle, then EpiPens.

There have been many attempts at immunization therapies, let’s hope this one works on a broad population.

IIRC, the remedy for ADHD behavior when I was in school was a swat.

I'm pretty sure it was more effective than Ritalin.

Lets be honest. Most experts would agree that raising children isn't something that parents should try at home.
