Since I first heard that song (I think it was on a Happy Days episode) I always thought the couple slept together, woke up together, and concocted an incredible story to conceal this from their parents. After all both falling asleep in a movie theater until 400 am is simply not plausible. No one awakened them on the way out? The theater was cleaned up by staff and still no one awakened them? They woke up at 400 am and just left the theater? It wasn’t locked up? Ludicrous. I’m amazed at some of the comments on this thread as I thought everyone udnerstood the joke.
Big fan of Don and Phil, BTW. “Bird Dog” and “Leave my woman alone” are my favorites. Oh, and “Kathy’s Clown.”
The Everlys also did a version of “Paradise” that’s as good as John Prine’s.
“When I die, let my body float down the Green River.
Let my soul rise on up to the Rochester Dam.
I’ll be halfway to Heaven with Paradise waitin’
Just five miles away from wherever I am.”
Phil Everly — halfway to Heaven.

The theater would have been a drive in, and back in the day many of those in rural america didn’t have a locked gate.
College age people might car pool to a party after the show and then pick up their cars later to save on gas.
