What followed in the '70s, '80s and '90s was music containing foul lyrics, explicit sex, hatred of parents, gangsta rap ...
Whoa, you forgot the '00s and '10s. In fact, with the American culture in constant decline over the last 40-50 years, they're worse than the decades that preceded them.
(I'd post some images displaying said culture, but this is a family oriented website.)

I apologized numerous times to my son, growing up in the 90’s, for the lack of sweet, romantic songs. I told him that music was lovely when I was growing up in the 60’s and I wished he could have those types of songs, too. He does revere the Beatles and Beach Boys, not as role models but for their lovely songs. Now Jay-Z and other Rap artists have destroyed the ‘lovely’ in teen music. More's the pity.

Interesting how the best vocal harmonies often come from siblings. The Everly Brothers, The Andrews Sisters, The Bee Gees, The Beach Boys and on and on.

I had two sons growing up in the 90s and they flat out rejected rap all on their own. They love music from the 60s and 70s and one is even a Dead Head.
We've also had a black owned radio station in town since the early 70s and from Day One, the owner has refused to play any rap that glorifies violence, sexism, hate, drugs, etc.

I mourn the passing of Phil Everly, but through his music he will live on forever.
Back when they were BIG my, older sister and I loved the Everly Brothers! My dad HATED “Rock & Roll”. When “All I Have to do is Dream” would come on the radio we would BEG him not to change the channel. He would mock the song by claiming that when they sang the lyric “Gee Whizz” they were really saying “Cheese Whizz”. He actually did like “Poor Little Fool” by Ricky Nelson.

Take a message to Mary
But don’t tell her where I am
Take a message to Mary
But don’t say I’m in a jam
You can tell her I had to see the world
Or tell her that my ship set sail
You can say, she better not wait for me
But don’t tell her I’m in jail, oh don’t tell her I’m in jail
Take a message to Mary
But don’t tell her what I’ve done
Please don’t mention the stagecoach
And the shot from a careless gun
You can tell her I had to change my plans
And cancel out the wedding day
But please don’t mention my lonely cell
Where I’m gonna pine away until my dying day
Take a message to Mary
But don’t tell her all you know
My hearts achin’ for Mary
Lord knows I miss her so
Just tell her I went to Timbuktu
Tell her I’m searchin’ for gold
You can say she better find someone new
To cherish and to hold, oh Lord, this cell is cold
Mary, Mary, oh Lord, this cell is cold

I heard “Wake Up Little Susie” was banned from several radio stations because the situation was objectional to some.

I heard Wake Up Little Susie was banned from several radio stations because the situation was objectional to some. The line that was objectionable to some radio stations was "What will we tell our friends when they say Ooh-La-La?" because they felt it implied the two might have had sex.

Or sleeping with Suzie and then telling her to wake up the next day...

They did some great great stuff......fully worthy of membership in the top echelon of the R&R Hall of Fame.

All I Have To Do Is Dream: Was playing when I asked a girl to go steady, back in 1958. Even had a Friendship ring for her. Wonder where she is now?
