PERRIS (CBSLA.com) — A target shooter accidentally shot and wounded someone in the chest Saturday during an event in Perris, authorities reported.

The shooting occurred shortly after 1 p.m. at Christmas Tree Lane and Santa Rosa Mine Road, according to Deputy Mike Vasquez of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

The person injured was driven to a location near Washington Street to meet up with deputies and was then transported to a hospital. The person’s condition was not immediately known.

A witness told deputies that the shooter and victim were among an estimated 200 people who were participating at a shooting range event, Vasquez said. The event was held on property owned by the Bureau of Land Management.

How do you “accidentally” shoot someone in the chest at a competition?

This story is a wee bit light on facts, isn’t it?

Never, ever, decide to streak across a target competition down range.

That it was accidental might be assumed, but whether it was negligent depends upon an investigation that hasn’t yet been completed. It may well have been negligent but that assumes facts not yet in evidence.

suggestion is it may have been a ricochet; very rocky area

“A target shooter fired off a round that richocheted and struck someone in the chest today during an event in Perris, a sheriff’s deputy said.

Sheriff’s deputies received a 911 call at 1:26 p.m. about the accidental shooting that took place at Christmas Tree Lane and Santa Rosa Mine Road.

It was not immediately known from what the gunshot rebounded, the deputy said. — City News Service”

Couldn’t have been all that serious - would think directly to hospital ..
Kind of like the guy gets robbed and calls his lawyer before police.. I mean if you are going to do that, DON’T tell the police you called them second.....

Saw a scene where the range master called ‘cease fire’ and a young shavetail turned away from the range with pistol still in hand....Gunny sort of ‘berated’ him telling him if he EVER had his weapon raised and NOT pointed down range, he was going to put it where the sun don’t shine and pull the trigger....
Young LT turned toward the Capt and the Capt basically said ‘What he said, dummy’!

As long as there's no fire danger, either nothing burnable within a mile or after a good rain, try shooting some tracers.

If you have a sand or dirt backstop between one and 300 yards away, you might be surprised to see where your bullets are going.

"Target Shooter Accidentally Shoots Person In The Chest At Perris Event"

I guess that title makes better click bait than "Participant in Perris Shooting Range Event Struck by Ricochet."
