Why are my Chicken Thighs suddenly So Expensive?
Dec. 21 2013 | Lee Martell

Today I went to a local supermarket in the Terra Linda area of Marin County, a little north of San Francisco. This large grocery store is but one of many belonging to a very popular grocery retailer. So, I bought six pounds, and eight ounces of chicken thighs at $1.79 per pound. After a little walk around comparison, I see most are within this price range. I end up paying $10.88, minus $1.21 with my Club Card, that equals a grand sum total of $9.67 out of pocket. The store is a great place to shop. The areas are clean. I even know some of the cashiers individually. The employees don't run away or openly sneer if you have questions about location. It's a huge store, and the less ambulatory or the tired have been known to shop from a golf cart. The store has a self check that I only use when in a big rush. I prefer not using the self-check, and let the paid cashier do the necessary thinking to get me through the line. So what am I complaining about? Well, the price. A few months ago, this same package of chicken thighs, wings or drums would have cost me much less. I am estimating, this pack of meat I just paid $9.67 for (with discount) would have cost me about $5.40 or so (with discount) only six months ago. What has changed? Maybe the gasoline for the trucks has gone up. They may be using diesel. The gas price has been somewhat stable at $3.45 to $3.90 up and down for the last year. Maybe the price has changed because people will keep buying it. Has there been a Chicken shortage in the states? That would be bad news for KFC.

My parents often recall the days when, being poor, they lived on king crab and other foods cheap as nobody with money wanted to eat it. Then people with money changed their minds.

Supply and demand.

10 pounds of chicken is $6.95 at Walmart now, up from $5.90 last I checked.

Strategic mass starvation worked pretty well for Vlad. Lenin, didn’t it? At least for a while. You need to be a lot less than human to starve millions of your own countrymen because they present an ‘inconvenience’.

The giant sightless feathered abomination rushed towards me like a freight rain, crushing the baby seals in its path as it uttered its terrifying cry: “Chikeli - li! Chikeli - li!”
I do not recall how we made it out of that fear maddened tunnel, but all I recall is that horrible sound!

“‘Superbug’ bacteria widespread in US chicken, consumer group finds”

Here’s a tip: Cook the chicken before you eat it.

Pork used to have trichinosis, cooking resolved the issue but it’s still a good idea to cook pork.

They say pizza joints are pretty good money too, or at least that’s what I heard.

The bar that sells the garlicky-salty wings actually has take-out. They must do a pretty good business, they have a separate take-out entrance and room, I always assumed it had something to do with minors buying food from them.

I wonder what the local church fund-raiser grilled/bar-b-q chicken Saturday halves go for in different places. Last time I bought them I think they were 2 halves for 5 bucks. I always heard the origin of the recipe around here was from some cat named ‘Bob Shirky(sp?)’ from NC.’

New studies show that 97 percent of that chicken from the market has harmful bacteria.

So cook it until you kill the bacteria, just like you've always had to do.

I have to agree. They say that the chicken today is generally much more bland than it used to be. So any more mild tasting meat is now referred to as ‘tasting like chicken.’

The FDA ordered chicken distributors to purchase from Union-run exchanges out of Chicago.../s

Seriously...I noticed the same here in my state. No idea, other than feed inflation creep (biofuels).

Regular pizza seems to be something that is hard to mess up too badly, many small independents out there.

You do know the Syfy channel is going to make one of their Saturday $1.95 production cost movies about that thing.

The guy that told me about pizza joints ran down the list of ingredient’s prices that the pizza joint he had worked at for years used and what they sold them for in pizza form. Pretty impressive ratio, according to him.

$5 carry out is the most food you can get for that price from a restaurant

Bacon is $8.97/lb here in York-Harrisburg. Two years ago it was 3.29/lb.

Of course, you could always cook the chicken before you eat it.

Another tip: rinse the meat first, shake dry for a bit, then paint with a small nylon brush quite thoroughly with vineger. You can dilute the vinegar if you wish, but I have found that full strength works best and only takes a small amount. Wait for a bit then sprinkle lightly with fine-grain salt and allow to dry for a bit (depending upon how deep you wish the mixture to soak into the crevices and pores. Rinse quickly and immediately throw into the pan, pot, or oven and cook as you normally would. Works extremely well, and kills pretty much anything vile on the meat since vinegar and salt are not tolerated at all by any unwanted contaminants.

On a totally separate topic, I know of a very good home remedy for athlete's foot, although I probably should not mention that in the same thread as a 'cooking' post.

Going to KFC sounds a whole lot easier.
