Today I went to a local supermarket in the Terra Linda area of Marin County, a little north of San Francisco. This large grocery store is but one of many belonging to a very popular grocery retailer. So, I bought six pounds, and eight ounces of chicken thighs at $1.79 per pound. After a little walk around comparison, I see most are within this price range. I end up paying $10.88, minus $1.21 with my Club Card, that equals a grand sum total of $9.67 out of pocket. The store is a great place to shop. The areas are clean. I even know some of the cashiers individually. The employees don't run away or openly sneer if you have questions about location. It's a huge store, and the less ambulatory or the tired have been known to shop from a golf cart. The store has a self check that I only use when in a big rush. I prefer not using the self-check, and let the paid cashier do the necessary thinking to get me through the line. So what am I complaining about? Well, the price. A few months ago, this same package of chicken thighs, wings or drums would have cost me much less. I am estimating, this pack of meat I just paid $9.67 for (with discount) would have cost me about $5.40 or so (with discount) only six months ago. What has changed? Maybe the gasoline for the trucks has gone up. They may be using diesel. The gas price has been somewhat stable at $3.45 to $3.90 up and down for the last year. Maybe the price has changed because people will keep buying it. Has there been a Chicken shortage in the states? That would be bad news for KFC.
Don’t believe the rumors. Many low to mid-income folks live here, some are the new people (immigrants), others just citizens who like the area. Many mid-income people are able to live in Marin County by sharing a residence and splitting the rent with the leaseholder. The crime is sort of low here. How I know that is when you see seven police cars surrounding a 7/11 store to talk to a shoplifter. Those Klieglights have never burned so bright on any suspect. I was about run off the road the other day by a cop rushing to a similar shoplifter situation at a nail salon.
Nope, just season to taste, pack the jar as tight as you can and leave about an inch or so headroom. Open and heat for instant roast beef.
Have you noticed all the scare stories about bacteria on chicken products? They are getting ready to regulate the hell out of the industry. By the time they get done expect to see $100 chickens.

I don’t know why it’s so expensive for you, Stater Bros. in SoCal has thighs or drumsticks @1.39 a pound. Must be that great store with a club card.

Awful. Guess nooks and crannies cost more than we thought.They are the best,though.

Geez!That is robbery!We use to get 3 packs of English muffins for 99 cents at Shaws in Boston in 2000.They weren’t Thomas muffins but who cares when you’re on a budget.
BTW, they had a limit of two. So I buzzed the backroom of the butchers and told them I wanted 2, 20 pound roast. No problem, I had my 2 limit.
They send the chicken to China to be processed and then bring them back. The cost of well travelled poultry is included in the purchase price.
It happens.

Bacon has really gone out of sight...hubby used to catch wild hogs and we fed them out...really good eating. Then city folks started paying to hog hunt so can’t just go get one when we want to like the good old days.

I’ve never liked breasts … too dry. Thighs, being dark meat are flavorful and moist.
Also, all of a sudden, all we can find are boneless skinless chicken breasts, no bone in and skin on. I like the bone in (grills and bakes better) and the skin is easy to remove (if you want it that way....).
Check the meat aisle in your store to see if there is a discount section.
Interesting option, absolutely! However,,I think I’ll pass on that. Cthuken makes lousy sandwiches, so I’ve been told.
