Somebody please get this message to Glenn Beck. He's talking too close to that beautiful RCA 44 mic. Try backing off at least six inches, then try backing off a whole foot.
Couldn’t his sound engineer compensate?
To solve this problem, a jumper connection is provided on the micro¬phone terminal board that provides either of two degrees of compensation for close talking. When the jumper is in the M (music) position no compensation is provided, and the response is essentially uniform from 50 to 15,000 cycles per second, provided that the announcer or musical instrument is at least three feet from the micro¬phone. However, the announcer may move as close to the micro¬phone as 12 inches when the jumper is in the V1 position, or seven inches when it is in the V2 position, without causing objectionable low-frequency boost. Seen here with its terminal board cover removed, jumper connections are (from left to right) M, V1, and V2. Refer to Fig. 4 for corresponding frequency responses.
Quoted from Radio Corporation of America Industrial Electronic Products Broadcast Audio Equipment Instructions for the Type 44-BX Velocity micro¬phone, MI-4027-H, -J, -K (with insert for -L), IB-24267-5(-5A), circa 1951.
Understanding Glen Beck as I think I do in some small ways, Glen probably wants to have us hear the hemming, hawing, lip popping, gasping, exhalations that are guaranteed to occur if you chose to ‘mouth’ your microphone that closely. Glen knows enough about production and management to leave it in or take it out. Some call it purposeful emoting. If too many complain about it, he may suddenly discover a ‘cure’ for all that emoting.
Those old RCA's though -- they're really, really sensitive.
Nothing like destroying the ribbon in the mic!
Thanks for the education. Always learn from FR and Freepers.
I just read the spec's on that mic -- it can pick up a fly fart at 30 feet. Why does he need such a sensitive mic??
” Why does he need such a sensitive mic??”
Because he’s Beck...and because he thinks that because he lacks sensitivity his mic does?
If you tune in tomorrow, I’ll tell you exactly why! It’s a big reason, real big!
ROFLMAO!! Good one.
Great response!
That said, I have a suggestion for Beck - a microphone commensurate with his talents:
Does Beck really use the 44, or is it just a prop?
Larry King had a hollow prop 77 that was there just for appearance. I know it was fake because he had a guest that brought exotic animals to the show, and one of the animals jumped on the desk and knocked the fake microphone to the floor. It made no sound at all. If a live mike hits the floor, you will definitely hear it.
Beck has a fantasy that he is the reincarnation of Orson Welles. That’s why he wants an iconic vintage microphone in front of him.
I think you are right, because the sidekicks do it too. I can’t listen to that show right now. It’s all “hmmm” and reaction silence and “well...you said...” “did I? did I?....” “oh, oh!....”, etc. And then it’s exhortation to love God (which I do) and how we need a spiritual awakening (which we do) and then it’s a commercial.
I like Glenn Beck, but I just can’t take him lately.
How many people tune in to hear you every day?
Flapp Jackson in the Morning this Morning wouldn’t make this mistake.
