APD Names Man Arrested After Midtown Standoff

Chris Klint Chris Klint, Senior Digital Producer, cklint@ktuu.com POSTED: 05:52 AM AKST Nov 08, 2013 UPDATED: 10:29 AM AKST Nov 08, 2013

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -

Anchorage police have identified an armed man who surrendered to officers and was arrested at a Midtown home early Friday, ending an overnight standoff involving his own children.

APD spokesperson Jennifer Castro says 30-year-old Thi Chau has been charged with third-degree counts of assault and criminal mischief, fourth-degree counts of misconduct involving weapons and controlled substances, and one count of reckless endangerment.

Police dispatchers received a call reporting shots fired at the home, near the intersection of 50th Avenue and Laurel Street, at about 11 p.m. Thursday. Chau's children, ages 4 and 6, were both present.

"Basically, what we were told was that people inside the residence heard a couple of shots fired," Castro said. "They evacuated the residence, and then we had learned that there was a male inside the residence with two young children, possibly with a weapon."

Responding officers, including APD's Special Assignment Unit, found some residents already outside, with others still evacuating as they arrived. Officers were able to talk Chau, who was wielding a handgun, out of the home before his arrest at about 3:30 a.m.

"APD's SWAT team was called out to the scene to initiate negotiations with the armed male who was continually brandishing a gun in front of officers," Castro wrote in a Friday statement on the case. "At 3:39 a.m. the male subject came out of the residence and surrendered to police."

Chau is being held at the Anchorage Jail.

Cops didn't shoot him, his dog or kids.

Nice to see a story showing real professionalism from law enforcement- very volatile situation ends with no injuries and suspect surrendering.

It's the norm, but it doesn't make interesting reading to the scofflaws and anarchists.

To paraphrase a drill sergeant...

Nothing good ever happens at 3:00 AM in the morning in Anchorage, Alaska...so you shouldn’t be there in the first place.

Wasn't there a shopping-mall shooting a couple days ago with multiple shooters, AK-47s, etc.?

Where'd that go? Memory hole?

Have you ever seen how much of Asia is in the northern climes?

It gets pretty darn cold in northern South Korea during the winter - I was glad to have been issued a parka and muk-luks.

Yes, and I am NOT amazed at their indoor lifestyle or drinking--speaking of Russians. I have an old friend from North Dakota and she's told me some amazing stories of the cold there. That's why she moved to California when she was young.

At least many of those folks DO play games outdoors--ice hockey and such. Got to hand it to them. I used to read about Tibet (Hans su lin) and could just imagine the cold. Brrrrr.

Thank you for serving.

Thanks for the thanks. My main heritage is Polish so I have cooler weather in my genes. Currently living in S. MS and the summers are as brutal for me as a NY winter. Wife hates the cold so I agreed to stay here if we could make ends meet - was half-way hoping I would have to chase a job a bit further north (central TN would have been perfect).

My husband and I lived in Saudi Arabia on the Arabian/Persian Gulf. The summer temps were 115-117 degrees with 95% humidity. The heat began, and I think 105 degrees is "heat," and cooled down by mid November.

Each home had TWO HUGE A.C. units. Just to test the system one day I got our home down to 60 degrees. Just like home.

The water, the gulf, was also 95 degrees.

After living there for five years I SWORE I would never, never, ever, ever complain about hot weather, no matter where I traveled to. Lol. I don't care for snow either so California is perfect for me. It's been my home most of my life and the weather suits me to a tee.

Off the coast today there MUST have been a huge run of smelt or something because there were DOZENS of dophins and seals fishing, eating and playing only a few hundred yards from shore. FABULOUS to watch.
