Man enters burning house to rescue beer

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Officials are still investigating the cause of a house fire that broke out on 42nd St. near Oates Ave. in Columbus, Thursday afternoon, but residents are blaming a newly installed water heater.

Six adults and two young children were inside watching television when the room began filling with smoke. After the children were rescued and everyone made it outside safely, a man who walks with a cane went back in the burning house to retrieve something he left behind.

"I told them to get the kids out and everything, and me myself, being an alcoholic, I was trying to get my beer out," said Walter Serpit, "I went back into the house like a dummy and the door shut on me because this back draft was about to kill me."

Serpit managed to save several cans of beer and he escaped the home without getting burned.

The Red Cross arrived shortly after firefighters extinguished the flames and they are helping the family get back on their feet. One Red Cross volunteer at the scene said they were able to respond quickly because a neighbor alerted them to the situation.

Idiot. For $10 he can go rescue some beer from the grocery store and not burn the insides of his lungs.

It’s All About the Beer.

I've never thought of Bud Light as beer.

Regrettably, it's a hit with my son and his cousins.

When I go out, it's got to be Shiner, Guinness, Ziegenbock, Heineken, Sam Adams, Bitburger, Blue Moon, Buffalo Butt, Rahr's Blonde, or Pook's Pilsener.

If not, I'm drinking water.

Maybe wife then beer. Maybe wife to carry the beer out instead.

Ah, good point. I like the way you think.

I've never thought of Bud Light as beer.

Bud Light is not beer, it's just a reason to go to the used beer department.

Females drink it so that they can go to the latrine at the same time (and do whatever).

A man would throw the beer out the window WITH the babies.

That way, the babies can guard the beer until the man gets out.

Both. Rescue the beer first, then add the gas on your way out!

I knew when the story referenced several CANS that we weren’t talking real beer...there are beers worth risking your life for; this garbage isn’t one of them.

Then there was the proctologist who was examining a patient and gave the nurse orders.

She promptly returns with a Bud Lite.

The Dr says....”I ordered a butt light, not a bud lite!”

Bada boom!

Years ago I read how people, who wake up with their house on fire, will grab the most irrelevant things on the way out.

One man, in the article I read, grabbed his bowling ball because he had a bowling tournament the next night.

Bitte Ein Bit?

Jawohl!

I lived in Traben-Trarbach for 4 years. The two major beers in that area were Bitburger and Konigsbacher. I would drive to Koblenz at least one Sunday a month to enjoy lunch at the Konigsbacher brewery restaurant. It had a great view of the Rhine, and it served bock beer year round.

Unfortunately, Konigsbacher is not exported to the US. Not known to many folks outside Texas is the strong German influence in South TX and the Hill Country. That has led, in part, to the great brews produced by Shiner and Rahr (Fort Worth), to name just two.

Risking your life to rescue some beer from a fire is kinda dumb, it's supposed to be kept cold.

Bud Light is definitely not worth your life. Probably not even worth your worst enemy’s life either.
