Sleep 'cleans' the brain of toxins
BBC News ^ | Oct 17, 2013 | James Gallagher

The US team believe the "waste removal system" is one of the fundamental reasons for sleep.

Their study, in the journal Science, showed brain cells shrink during sleep to open up the gaps between neurons and allow fluid to wash the brain clean.

They also suggest that failing to clear away some toxic proteins may play a role in brain disorders.

Their findings build on last year's discovery of the brain's own network of plumbing pipes - known as the glymphatic system - which carry waste material out of the brain.

Interesting - the bottom line is indeed that sleep is very important, without sleep people literally die.

The brain uses sleep to wash away the waste toxins built up during a hard day's thinking, researchers have shown.

Sleep more or think less to keep the brain fresh??

If you can’t get enough sleep you can always clear all of that gunk out with a huge brain fart.

I guess I'm a slow learner, then. I said 'I do' again fifteen years ago, but this time around it wasn't as bad. When you naively marry Ilsa The Nazi She-Bitch, you take away some good insights when you limp away from the aftermath.

I find that reducing myself to an occasional comatose state is highly restorative. A thirty pack and a handful of valium and I am a good no go.

So who sleeps? Seriously. Most people I know get 5 hours max a night. And yes, we are desperate for more.

Simple answer: re-arrange priorities so that sleep is nearer the top, and drop activities that would result in getting less sleep.

I sleep 8 hours a night, except for the semi-sleepwalking down the hall thing to the little room that happens when men get over 50.

Of course, my heart is pure and my conscience is clear.

And I get a 30 minute nap after lunch. It's like being 6 years old again.
