What Do Cats See?

We spend a lot of time looking at cat videos, cat photos, all things cat. But what do cats see when they look at us and the world around them?

The photos below hypothesize what human and cat vision looks like. Human vision is up top and cat vision is below.

One might conclude the cat can’t see much. This isn’t true. The night scene is somewhat suggestive of the feline advantage. The cityscape doesn’t make sense. There are fliedermausen, but not fliederkatzen. Nor do cats normally wander around in market places. Movies that would show a tiny moving object glowing as though lit by neon might convey the idea of a cat’s visual advantage better than these still shots do.

They left out something very important here. The vertical-slit shape of the cat’s pupil. This makes cats much more sensitive to horizontal motion. Try moving your hand up and down in front of a cat and they can’t see it, but side to side and they are dead on.
