I got the hang of cracking the nuts open with a hammer.
Those shells are HARD!!!!
I did not get any intact meats.

Since then Ive been reading and learning, and even got a few neighbors interested as well. Good! The more the merrier.
We've had a beautiful fall here in NYS. But winter is coming and I am eyeballing my supplies for the winter.
We live a fair distance from the grocery store and cannot run out for the least little thing. It's simply not worth the gas.
Besides, I HATE hauling stuff in through the snow and slop.
Between those two reasons, I am not sure which is my bigger motivator for stocking up for the winter.

Heres a routine I go through every time (like Sat.) theres severe weather just in case the roads are cut off or the power goes off for a few days - get the kitchen cleaned, wash the dishes, fill containers with water (no electricity = no well water), set out extra water for the pets, bake up cakes/cookies (no refrigeration needed), cook up whatever foods in the fridge that need cooked now but eaten cold later, plug in the battery charger and charge cell phones, set water buckets by the toilets, do the laundry, bathe and wash hair. Sounds like a great plan/routine.

Crack walnuts with a bottle jack and a stop of some kind. Put the nut between the top of the bottle jack and the stop above it and you have the control to stop just as the nut cracks. You can also mount the bottle jack laid on a board and secure it, then put something to put the nut against to press the bottle jack against the nut. Works great!

Looks like the kind of thing mr. mm has laying around the barn.
It doesn’t really matter if the meats crack, though. Mostly I use them for baking and would need to chop them up anyway.
