Vanity - Question about cats

Posted on 10/11/2013 6:58:47 PM PDT by Perdogg

I am thinking about getting a cat when I move into a permanent place (condo or Townhouse). I know some people think it is strange for a guy to like cats, well, I like all animals. So let's not draw any inferences from this thank you.

I was thinking about getting one of the rarer breeds, but if I do get a cat I am going to love the animal no matter what. I would get a rescue.

I was thinking getting a Bengal, Mau, or an Abby. I know people, including Freepers, have said that Bengals require a lot of attention and is probably for a more experienced cat owner. I also heard that it is not good to leave them alone for 9 hours a day.

Does any one have any experience with Maus or Abbys? Does anyone have a Peterbald? I am not opposed to getting a non-pure bred, in fact, the most loving pets I had as a child were mixed. And they tend to live longer.

Any thoughts or good advice?

Dogs have an owner. Cats have a staff.

I have had cats all of my married life. All of the were my wife’s critters. I simply have no use for useless critters. But hey that’s me, enjoy your cat.

I probably wouldn’t pay a lot of money just to have a purebred cat, but I do like the Scottish Folds.

Just my personal preference, but I think a shelter pet is the way to go - it’s where we’ve always gotten our cats. I’ve heard that mixed breeds have better genes. Besides, you’re rescuing an animal that might wind up being destroyed!

Definitely get a rescue cat; two of my three are rescues. One came from a shelter and the other was living in our yard when we moved into our house in 2009 (she didn’t come to live in the house with us until early 2012, though). None of them are purebreds, but my wife and I love them all.

As for the one “non-rescue” cat, the yard cat was pregnant with her when she finally moved in with us. We kept that one and adopted out her three littermates.

Cats aren't as smart as people think.

They eat,they poop,they sleep.

Not a breed answer, but a piece of advice. Even though cats are solitary, they do still get lonely. If you get one, please get two. Preferably kittens, so they can grow up together. We’ve always had cats (and dogs, and birds, and chameleons). We never have just one cat. They will amuse themselves while you’re gone during the day.

Enjoy!!

Get a conure. Don’t stink like a cat. Can teach it to Meaouw. Smarter than a cat.

Get a rescue, preferably from a vet or a shelter they support. I am a guy and I always had Siamese that were rescued.

Sometimes the vet will provide shots and neutering at a discount.

Whichever category you choose from as far as breeds or rescue or whatever, make sure that you make the final decision based on it’s personality and connection to you.
