As an aside, there is something about being on a bus that turns the violent into ultra-violent. Subways can be like that as well, but it’s maximized on a bus, likely due to both the confinement and the ease of escape in a strange neighborhood where the criminal may not be known.
As a pitch for knives for self-defense, they are likely even better on a bus than having a gun, because they prevent the attacker from closing on you, are a short range weapon, and avoid collateral harm to innocent people.
There are some neighborhoods which could use a good cleaning. Of course, such tactics are illegal.

Some time ago, I was involved in what might seem to be an exact opposite. I stopped a homeless white man from harassing a young women on the New York City subway, and a gang of young black man came to my defense. We should have a fund for those who come to the aid of those who are attacked like this man. Perhaps this homeless man could be helped, when he recovers, to find a job and a decent place to live.

The first thing that needs to be done, is find the AH's in government who decided dumping these people into their neighborhoods was a good idea, and hold them responsible.
In a just world, these rotten AH's would be deported to Haiti along with those they forced on innocent law abiding Americans.
