I have a hand-held CB that powers off a car battery. Only problem is the antenna is not very big. I suppose if you mounted an antenna on your rig, you could get some pretty decent range out of it.
Thanks, ItAin’tEasy and djf. I think the CB antenna is what one of my clients suggested. He said I could either put it on my roof or on my truck, and that it might give me the range I need.

My Mom lives about a half mile downstream on the main road and on the wrong side of the creek. In other words she gets flooded in but a lot more frequent than I do because the bridge is higher on the dead end road I live on.
She has the reality of a wooden bridge in her driveway and possibility of a flood taking it out to consider. So we know by experience when the creek reaches a certain stage we have an hour or so to get the cars out. It's been like that the 45 years Mom and Dad lived there. The good part is if she needs help and it's flooded I can walk to her house along the side of the ridge.
Generally the flooding here last no more than 12 hours. My road got took out once but wasn't so bad my old 4WD truck couldn't get through. It took the county a week to come fix it. When it floods that bad here county offices get shut down anyway.
Most of the phone companies have spun off the tower operations. Instead of each company having a tower now, they all pile on one.

Especially if you take the radio somewhere to tweak it. Not saying I advise doing that kinda stuff because that kinda stuff is against the law you see. Hi Uncle Charlie LOL.

So true. But that’s only if you don’t spend all your money at the casino.
I really wouldn't suggest ham radio for business use unless it's a true emergency.
Maybe you should reconsider and at least check out satellite phones — check with the various providers. This article says they do work in rain and bad weather too and are not prohibitively expensive — and since you need it for your business it would be tax deductible.

I’m not going to read this whole thread, because it’s way beyond me, but I will volunteer this piece of information:
When I first got on the Net, I was on a booksellers’ list. Someone wrote in asking about books on telegraph—how to set it up and use it and maintain it. The answer from the list was “YOU AND EVERYBODY ELSE!”
Look into a business band radio, They use repeaters and are fairly easy to get, the only thing is you would have to buy a radio for whom ever you are communicating with also.

If you know someone with the skill, you can get a Highly illegal Amp for a CB radio.
Of course don’t get caught with one. Knew a Guy who made his CB radio so powerful his range was like 10 miles.
You need a very large culvert set, like a large corrugated oval. Get a excavator to price one for you.
The other thing I have considered, as an “officer of the court” ask the sherif of you county if you can get a radio from his system to use in emergencies.
