Well, I sure screwed it up today… (Update at #250)

Well, I sure screwed it up today… I went to sit down on a chair that wasn't there and fell, now I can't move my legs and the ER released me saying nothing is broke so there is nothing they can/will do. No brace, no chair, no crutches, nothing. The doctor didn't even touch me, tell me to wiggle toes, take my temp, listen to my heart, nothing...just a CT scan and then let me go. I couldn't even get in the car without a nurse, 2 cops and a citizen who offered to help. I don't know what to do now, I can't walk :'(

This is of course concerning to me since I have a fused spine and ongoing issues. I'm calling my pain management doc to see if he wants to do something different.

Chiro, not neuro.

The latter are arrogant SOB’s who will make sure you are VERY impressed with the glossy teak scroll squares on their wall, and the white coat.

In the end they can’t help you, and you wa$$$$ted lot$ of time and money.

My ex-boss was a neuro was an idiot and couldn’t program a VCR after a power outtage —sounds made up, right?

The neuro LOATHED chiros, but GUESS WHO ended up actually helping me (and cheaply, what’s more) after MY injury..?

THE NEURO CANNOT HELP YOU.

I can’t imagine any of our local hospitals discharging under these circumstances.

I can't either! Our hospital has some amazingly caring people; if you said you couldn't walk or, really, had any kind of discomfort, they'd probably keep you overnight!

Do whatever you have to do to get a second opinion, go to another hospital, whatever. A few years ago hubby was in a horse wreck, local ER doc said he only had a couple of cracked ribs, would not admit him, released him. Hubby was having trouble breathing and I was quite concerned, as was my daughter who is a nurse. We took him to another town and ER doc there said he had numerous broken ribs and one had punctured his lung...that hospital transferred him to nearest trauma center where he had to have chest tube, a week in ICU...and lots, lots more care over weeks and months...

My experience is ER doctors are luck of the draw, and the deck is stacked against getting a good one- seems a lot of doctors don’t want to work ER.

Yes: You did screw up, if you failed to say you were “Jose” from “Mexico” and did not speak English, did not have any papers, and did not have any insurance.

If you had, you would likely have had gold-plated attention at the ER, as well as a cheer-up call from Janet Napolitano. As it is, you were treated as what you are: An undesirable (i.e., white male).

On a more serious note: Prayers for you. Your condition is no laughing matter. Please get a second opinion.

I think I may have been there once before. I had several things happen all at once a bit more than a year ago. I spent a week in the ICU with clots in both lungs had to have a hysterectomy and then back surgery. It’s my first time at the ER, but not my first time at the hospital.

I have had similar ER experiences. My advice? Go to another ER. Of course it’s friday night and you can’t get your GP for several days... that seems to be how it goes.

You go another hospital... after they do the exam and say that they’ll release you, you turn to your friend/relative/wife and you say, “guess this one will have to go to the lawyer.”

MAKE SURE that a nurse overhears you.

I once screamed in a waiting room at the top of my lungs that if they released my son, and if anything happened to that kid within the next 72 hours, I was going to OWN that doctor, the hospital, the board of directors, etc.

A nurse overheard me and my son was immediately transported via ambulance to a pediatric hospital and admitted for five days for a heart issue.

About 25 miles, but I can’t go to 2 ERs in the same day or my insurance won’t cover it...unless my doc recommends it

(I have a spinal fusion as well, so I get why this is concerning. That hardware and scar tissue can do anything.)

I will pray for you but I think it’s going to come back on its own (God may speed it up).

That was my thought too...why would they release me when I couldn’t move my own legs? The doc’s attitude is “so what...we’ll get you in the car, but then you’re on your own”

Have already had the nerve conductivity test...I have permanent nerve damage from them waiting too long to correct my spine damage. I had sciatica, a bulged disc and major pain. They made me wait nearly 2 years for the surgery to fuse. Now, I’m worse than I was before the surgery.

...and YES, it was extremely painful!

the neuro doctor can help you if the problem is neurological....

I don't think chiropractic is all that....it may be that the psychological affect of going to a hands on practitioner has a big impact on a person's well being...

They claim it is a Lumbar strain. I said “that doesn’t explain why I can’t lift my legs!

I have a 12 level fusion and I’m getting ready to go to the chiro next week.

It’s important to interview the chiropractor first. They MUST understand that they can’t do rotational adjustments. But they can use other techniques. (Such as the Activator)

Ribs can also get dislocated and be pushed back into place after a fusion.
