Frank Tripucka, first Denver Broncos QB, dies at 85 years old
CBS Sports ^ | September 12, 2013 | Josh Katzowitz

When Frank Tripucka first arrived in Denver in 1960 to work for the newly-formed Broncos of the newly-formed American Football League, he was only supposed to help assist head coach Frank Filchock in a coaching capacity.

Funny thing about that. Tripucka was apparently the best option the team had at quarterback. Thus, though he hadn't played in the NFL since 1952, he took over the starting spot and proceeded to throw for a career- and league-high 3,038 yards that season.

Tripucka -- who died Thursday morning at the age of 85 -- started for two more seasons (and led the league in passing yards again in 1962).

He is the father of former Notre Dame and Detroit Piston basketball star Kelly Tripucka who also played for the Utah Jazz and the Charlotte Hornets.

Oh, that rings a bell. I do remember his son, then. Awful strange the things you remember, especially since I haven't had occasion to ponder or recall his name or face since I don't know how long--the 70's?

If only I could remember to pick up paper towels the last three times I've been to the store.

The Broncos were the first major league team in any sport to call Denver home. Frank kicked it off in great style, beginning a love affair between the Broncos and the region that lives on to this day. RIP.

The Broncos wore those uniforms recently in a retro game. OMG they were butt ugly!

Love those vertical stripes on their socks that the Broncos wore back then! ;-)
