RENTON, Wash. (CBS Seattle/AP) — The Seattle Seahawks announced that the organization has hired undercover cops to wear San Francisco 49ers gear and patrol Sunday’s game in order to curb unruly behavior.

“We have great fans,” said Seahawks president Peter McLoughlin. “Our goal is to ensure a safe environment for all in attendance, including visiting team fans.”

The Seahawks announced Wednesday they will have the undercover police officers wearing opposing team apparel

Seahawks fans are not like neanderthal fans of other clubs. We are proud of our Hawks and don’t want to cast a bad image on the Hawks.

Agreed, unless the other team’s fans gang up on them. That would be my concern. For their sake I hope they have a good, coordinated strategy for help from fellow officers.

After a few unruly fans get shot, perhaps the rest will start behaving.

I’ve seen Hawk fans stop an altercation brought about by an opposing team fan. A couple of 49er fans started in on a group and people just got them separated. Wasn’t any need for security to show up but they did. All ended well.

Most cops have a chip on their shoulders, so this may be a good outlet while also avoiding police brutality charges.

Give them fifteen yards for taunting and pitch them from the stadium.

I last went to a Seahawks game about three years ago, and I saw one brief fight. (Of course I couldn’t see everything going on in the stadium.) So this police action might be an overreaction, although Seahawk fans DO detest SF coach Jim Harbaugh.

Raiders at Chargers always produces fights, stabbings, heart attacks, and Life Flight landing in the parking lot. Stealth Oakland thugs come to the stadium once each year to terrorize mostly well-behaved San Diego fans.

This is one huge area where I just can’t understand sports fans. How can one have such a weak mind and fragile ego so as to commit violence against a fan of another team, in a sport in which one has no hope whatsoever of competing personally.

The cops will give up within 30 minutes because they will find there are too many to arrest or the jail will be too full to arrest anyone else.

What else could explain the fact that both the Hell’s Angels and the Black Panthers originated in Oakland?

I'm betting that there aren't any cops in 49ers jerseys at all. I'm thinking that just saying there will be undercover cops is supposed to be a deterrent.

At Arrowhead Stadium, they announce a phone number, and encourage you to text it and turn in rowdy fans.

Last year it didn’t work so well. “Hey some guy with a paper bag over his head spilled beer on me” wasn’t a unique enough description.

In some cases, excessive consumption of alcohol might be involved. The game is just an excuse to party and get drunk.

Its A GAME

You make fun of the opposing team supporters, but you don’t get violent with them.

I was at a Bills game and a guy was in front of me wearing a Miami shirt- and he had to endure chants of “a$$hole a$$hole ...” etc.. but when one idiot rushed him about 10 more bills fans stopped him and gave him a good beat down.

We got some damn good fans here in Buffalo

I agree with you completely. Getting in fights over sports is stupid.

My point is that if the home team's fans are rowdy enough that the cops feel they need to go "undercover" in the opposing team's uniforms, they are putting themselves at risk. I guess that's what they get paid for, but still - they need to have a stratey to back each other up, in case trouble starts.

They could save a lot of time and hassle.. just blow marijuana fumes into the stadium bleachers before kickoff and at half time .. oh wait, half the crowd is probably stewed anyway... don’t try this in Oakland. baiting , that is.

Most of these fights start with drunk guys giving each other a friendly ribbing that gets unfriendly. Remember alcohol is an inhibition remover, which helps minor bad moods turn into major bad moods very quickly, and that’s when you get situation escalation.

However, I believe that this is another example of government working to control *all* events in our lives.

On principle, this should not be allowed to stand.

Most of these stadiums are public property.

Keeping the peace and protecting public safety on public property is a valid police function. The very opposite of the overreach you describe.

Funny, I've been to most NFL cities, and the only place I had my life threatened for the crime of supporting the other team was at Jack Murphy Stadium.

I was at the game with some Packer fans, including a family with little kids, and the abuse was so bad we had to leave.

Sounds like the Seahawk org. is more concerned about it's own fans

The Seahawks say game day staff will intervene against unruly behavior, foul or abusive language and verbal and physical harassment of opposing team fans
