J.R. Smith Definitely Didn’t Mean to Say We Should ‘Celebrate’ 9/11 Deaths
New York Magazine ^ | 9/11

But that's what the Knicks guard wrote in his Instagram tribute today. "Celebrate the deaths of the people in 9/11!" to be exact, with an exclamation point, followed by "#WELOVEYOU #WEWILLNEVERFORGET," so he's almost definitely not a terrorist. Hopefully just stoned.

JR played in Denver too. Cut him some slack, he’s not the sharpest knife in the drawer.

Not quite as bad as James Brolin’s “Happy 911!” on the radio a few years back.

I really don’t think he meant anything bad by it.

We usually celebrate anniversaries, and he just wasn’t thinking carefully when he said it. That’s my take on it. He was just trying to say that we should honor the occasion, that we shouldn’t forget or ignore it, as so many politicians and the MSM now do.

Sure. Everybody figures a an athlete’s going to get things wrong. We know what they mean and cut them slack. Now if a politician had said it it would be a different story.

I don’t think he meant anything bad by it. Just an unfortunate choice of words.

I’ll be generous and conclude that he’s simply rather foolish, rather than evil.

He meant to write “lives,” not “deaths.” Simple error, imo.

JR was drafted straight out of high school. Never attended college.

It is clear that next year we should just skip the day. Let’s just celebrate on the 20th, 25th, 50th etc. People are too offended this year. I mean people are offended about the AT&T picture which I thought was cool. Oh well people are just offended.....boo woo.

Not to give too much credit, but in fairness and per Merriam Webster:

Celebrate (v) - to honor (as a holiday) especially by solemn ceremonies or by refraining from ordinary business
