The 12th anniversary of September 11 is on Wednesday and Tumbledown Trails Golf Course in Verona, Wisc. decided to celebrate with a discount for golfers.

Except, wait, that's like the worst idea in the history of marketing ideas.

Especially with the way they went about it. Nine holes for $9.11 -- holy cow, what was the backup plan??

To its credit, Tumbledown responded to criticism on Facebook on Monday:

"We would first like to apologize to everyone that we have upset or feels we have disrespected in anyway. By no means did we mean to do this. Here is what we will do this Wednesday 9-11;

Someone at Tumbledown (name facepalm) Trails didn't think this one through. At all.

Geez that is not offensive. I would go play if I lived there.

I know the way I like to memorialize my fellow Americans is by playing a round of golf. There’s no better way to say ‘Freedom’ than by yelling “FORE!!!” on a sacred day. Golf also has a sanctifying effect like the other day when I shanked a shot through the stained glass window of a Catholic cathedral during a service and the congregation all bowed their heads as I played through and worked the angles of the altar into a nice chip shot past the water hazard of the bapistry.

In the immortal words of Comic Book Guy from the Simpsons:

Worst. Marketing. Idea. Ever.

And yes, Pan_Yan, I agree—not thought through at all....

and yet I am sure the person who thought it up truly meant no disrespect at all.

Just a lame brained idea whoever thought it up should have asked maybe just one other person.

I agree it was probably not meant to be disrespectful at all. But I would have thought at least someone at the local newspaper would have looked at the ad and asked the guy “are you really, really sure you want to do this?”

LOL, Megan. The sarc tag wasn’t even necessary.... :)

I hope my posts are making sense; not feeling very well today. But this is one of the worst stories I’ve ever read. What in the world were they thinking....

Some people these days just have no sense of reverence. Worse is that many of them will openly mock and ridicule people who do have a sense of reverance.

That is so true, and so sad... :(

Anyway, I have to go lie down. I hope everyone has a nice day.

They said they did it to remind/inform especially young golfers about the events of 9-11.

What is their regular rate?

If $9.11 is a good discount from regular rate,
I fail to see the dis-respect.

Golfing with friends is a great way to pay respect.
You are close to nature.
You are breathing fresh air.
You are walking on soft ground with green grass.
You have no time to worry about your other problems in life.
You walk 7 miles without getting bored.

Golf has helped me tremendously to keep in shape,
avoid heart problems, control my blood pressure etc.
Only pitfall in golf is the 19th hole. hahaha..

that is a good point
let’s say, as it probably happened that way, the the pro/ manager of the shop really did think it was a great way to honor the day, golfers do have their own world

so the person at the paper who assigns the ads never looked at it?
must have been a golfer too

It’s offensive to liberals. They want 9-11 to now be a day of public service to hold hands, sing kumbaya, and give time to the community.

I watched a documentary about Australian exploitation films (not quite drive-in movies).

In one, a news report came out about the lead actress in some film being horrified when she learned that she'd be taking her top of in a film that was in production.

The director promptly called her and said he didn't know there was a problem. She said that there wasn't, that she was just helping to generate some publicity.

They should offer golf balls with the heads of Muslim terrorists painted on them.
