Mort Zuckerman totals single mom’s car (NY Daily News Publisher)

Billionaire New York Daily News publisher Mort Zuckerman left the scene of a Hamptons accident after plowing his fancy Lexus into a parked Ford – and now his insurance company is sticking the stunned owner of the totaled car with the $4,000 tab.

Single mom Charlene Peele has been told by the media and real estate mogul’s insurer that she’ll get just $13,000 for her wrecked 2009 Fusion, even though she still owes $17,000 on what is now a heap of scrap metal.

“It’s outrageous,” Peele told The Post of her ongoing five-week fight with the media mogul’s insurance company. “It’s the principal of the thing. He hit me, but I’m the one running around like a crazy person, trying to sort out a mess I wasn’t even involved in. It’s the principal of the thing, and I’m the one left without a car.”

Peele, a veteran Starbucks manager, was at work when Zuckerman, 76, came tooling down Main Street in East Hampton Village on August 11 – a clear, sunny day – when he “looked away from the roadway,” veered right and slammed into Peele’s car, according to a police report.

Won’t be long before an ambulance-chaser starts the “pain and suffering, loss of sleep, mental anguish, loss of consortium, etc” arguments to get into the DEEP pockets of Zuckerman......

If Zuckerman had any decency he’s buy her a brand new car - better than the one she had before. That’d be pocket change for him.

Laws like 'hit-and-run' are for the 'little' people.

In this particular case it’s a good idea.

No. The insurance company paid her the full value of the car (assuming the insurance company isn't cheating her by paying wholesale rather than retail). Her problem is that she was upside down on her loan. If she had paid cash for her car when she bought it she would have gotten the same $13,000.

I just checked Kelley Blue Book and they listed $11,249 as the private party sale value for a Focus SE (since I didn't know the exact model). $13k doesn't seem like a ripoff settlement.

"Focus SE"

If it WAS a Focus SE, turning it into "scrap metal" is impossible; it came from the factory as scrap metal!

HOWEVER, if it was a 2009 Ford Fusion, then she's screwed because the new design sucks, and the 2009 (old design) was a far better design, and you can't even buy the new Ford Fusion with a V-6 engine anymore...you get a 4-banger, or a turbo 4-banger instead as the only choices....I'd sure be pissed if it was MY 2009 Fusion....

This is strictly a property damage claim so that stuff won’t work. Now if she had been in the car when it was hit then your scenario works.

Since she knows who hit her car I would think that this would be a simple matter to fix in small claims court. Failing that she should be making a lot of noise about a fat cat skating on a hit and run charge.

I looked up a low mileage 2009 Fusion SEL V6 with a Manhattan zip code and got $13,123 in good condition for a private sale which is $2k higher than the ACV “dealer trade in” of $11,138

Lifes tough ,, it’s always a bad deal to be upside down on a car but that’s not Zuckermans problem... she should have had “GAP” insurance, it’s a cheap rider.

You’re upside down to the tune of thousands of dollars the instant you drive the car off the lot. That’s why people (and lien-holders) insist on “replacement value,” not “cash value.”

Ultimately, the likely damaged party will be the lien-holder, not the chick.

LOL

When there's potentially THAT much money to pursue, she "loved that car, and it was her 'baby'...." "She can't sleep at night because she has nightmares about her beautiful dream car...."

In the REAL world of Litigation Lotto today, it doesn't matter if common sense tells you it's a no-brainer; today, just get it in front of a Jury that is thinking "he can afford it!", and all bets are OFF!

Zuckerman is a LIBERAL. Worse yet, he is a RICH liberal.

Those kind of people think they are not answerable to anyone, especially a low-life Starbucks manager-type. Who is she to question the rich liberal’s greatness?

Remember, this is the same guy that wrote Obama’s Styrofoam columns stadium speech.

I agree that there are some bizarre claims that somehow get in front of juries, but I’ll lay you odds that this particular one will never make it.
