Throw out ideas of what it could have been used for. It's a couple miles from the railroad tracks but maybe a theives tunnel from stolen RR cargo? Or Prohibition days?

I goggled mining and Lubbock. Apparently there was gold mining there. You may have found the Lost Conservative Mine. So, get a flashlight and explore.

Prohibition did not separate Texans from their whiskey. Various means were used to avoid the authorities, but tunnels were certainly among the choices.

Early tornado shelter reinforced with beams? Would have been nice if they detailed the how far the tunnel extended or at least estimated. And pull the property records as far back as they go..talk to oldtimers for some oral history.

The tunnel is pretty long and no one knows just how far it goes. There is no previous record of it either.

Wonder if it was an aqua-duct?

A map with the word mining and gold. I stopped there as it’s not my hole. But if it were you’d bet I wouldn’t tell a soul until I’d made certain that anything valuable was on my property...What if the treasure box is under public land? Or, worse, that really nasty guy next door that you hate.

I goggled mining Did you now?

Good point I forgot about Hoffa.

Lubbock and the county it’s in is notoriously dry due to religious influences. It is a central theme of that section of Michener’s book “Texas”.

They’re perplexed? I wonder if they thought about crawling in and see what they find. If they’re worried about a cave-in they can use a snake camera that plumbers use.

If gold is involved the gummit will lay claim to it. Probably an old root cellar.
