A young man was scalped and killed by the blades of a model remote-controlled helicopter that chopped off the top of his head in Gravesend, Brooklyn today, sources said.

The 19-year-old victim — a well-known model helicopter enthusiast — was on the corner of Shore Parkway and Bay 44th Street around 3:40 p.m., when he lost control of the toy aircraft, it boomeranged and sliced off the top of his head

Yeah, I wonder if he was actually killed by the blow to the head not the cutting.

Yes, and don’t forget, if just one life is saved it is worth it.

The headline is wrong.

Apparently the blade struck him in the throat and he probably bled to death.

No remote Control Helicopter could lop off a person’s head.

Clever kid engaged in innocent recreation gets killed in a freak accident. So many of his contemporaries are engaged in much less legitimate activities. Condolences for his family.

He should’ve been wearing his helmet.

Horrible! Yes, there are large RC helis that can do serious damage, some have very high rotor speeds. On the other hand, here is a big negative against police drones.

Well, there you are and there you have it!

MANDATORY LID LAWS FOR RC COPTER JOCKEYS!!

A skid lid would have prevented this tragedy.

Social burden and all that rot, doncha know.

I’m joshing, but I KNOW some pinko, statist, nannycrat will in deed introduce the bill asap.

Has Bloomberg come out with an ordinance that requires all RC aircraft operators, spectators and innocent passerby’s to wear football helmets? 100% background checks for purchasers of RC aircraft with a 1,000 hour training and license certification?

I’m not buying it. RC copters aren’t that heavy, the blades shouldn’t have nearly enough inertia to get through bone.

I agree. The rotary WING of an RC helicopter is a fragile thing. It does not have a cutting edge (rather rounded it is) and is not made of anything as tough as a pen knife blade.

I say cause of death was blunt force trauma with an ancillary skimming off of the scalp...which would have bled like a sumbitch. Skull bone is a lot tougher than the rotor of an RC rotary wing aircraft.

It must have been a large model, because I have a couple of smaller ones and I don’t think they could come even close to doing what is claimed here.

Read the article:

“I was playing at the park and we came into the clearing and we just saw a body on the floor, he was just decapitated, the whole top of his head was gone,” said Maria Delgado, 13.

He wrote just last month on his video channel that he was “loving” his Trex 700N model — “ one of the best nitros that I have ever flown with so much power.”

Example (actual RC, not actual victim):

Agreed! I made boomerangs for years. Once I was tossing a two foot ash prototype. Very heavy with lots of kinetic energy.

It was great and I couldn’t stop even when it started to get dark and the ‘rang dropped below the tree line.

I heard it hovering in front of me then it smacked me square in the middle of my forehead knocking me out.

I woke up later dazed and walked to a neighbor’s house where my pregnant wife was helping prepare food for a block party.

Not good. The blade cracked my skull and there was blood everywhere.

Wife screamed and fainted, the neighbors rushed me to the hospital.

Basically I was ok but there is still proud flesh in my forehead.

Point is it had so much inertia it should have broken not cracked my head

I am not allowed to play with ‘rangs anymore...sigh...

RC copters shouldn’t have enough inertia to decapitate.

I wish I could take credit for it but it was from Vic Morrow’s and two little kid’s tragic deaths in the Twilight Zone movie that led to the joke.
