I think it was more like the misguided belief that if you are nice to evil people, they will be nice to you.
The Temple Mount was never mentioned in Islamic literature. Jerusalem was never mentioned in the Koran. Mohammed supposedly took a “night journey” on his flying horse Barack, to the “farthest away mosque”. That’s a pretty slim claim on Jerusalem. At least they got the name of the horse right.

Do you understand the difference between the meaning of a word, and the identity of the referent of that word?
If I say that the English word God, the Hebrew word Elohim and the Arabic word Allah have basically identical meanings, that is a linguistic fact. Thus Arabic Christians, including the Copts presently being attacked in Egypt, use Allah in their services and Bibles to refer to the One True God.
I am not saying the Allah worshipped by the Copts is the same Person as the one worshipped by the Muslims, only that the word is the same. And that it means basically the same thing as God, Deus, Elohim, Theos, and Dios.
When Mohamed cleared the edifice of idols, he declared that the one true name of god was his father's god, allah.
Since this occurred in the 7th century, and Jerusalem, nor the Temple Mounts is mentioned anywhere in the Koran, I would say that the Jewish Temple site is in Jerusalem.
The important point is that whenever Islam physically invades a country, the first act is to occupy and change the original population's worship sites to mosques. What will happen to Norte Dame Cathedal once the muslims have their was.
In the past if you were a Christian or Jew, you had the choice of submission, without conversion. All others had the choice of conversion or death. Which would you choose?
