War on Coal Escalates: Over 200 Power Plants Expected to Close, Thousands of Jobs to Disappear

The administration’s war on coal and America’s abundant, reliable energy continues to gain momentum as the nation’s power sector faces an increasingly hostile regulatory environment. Reuters recently chronicled that more than 200 of the nation’s coal-fired power plants have announced plans to retire over the next decade in addition to the 138 units that have already shut down in the past five years. Estimates project this decline in coal-fired power generation could result in the loss of up to 100,000 megawatts of electricity across the country.

Coal is one of America’s most abundant and affordable sources of fuel and supports over 700,000 American jobs. It remains the country’s largest source of electricity, accounting for nearly 40 percent of the nation’s electric generation. But this critical power source, along with tens of thousands of jobs, is being threatened by costly regulations stemming from President Obama’s Environmental Protection Agency.

Despite a reduction in U.S. emissions over the past decade, the Obama administration has announced plans to impose expensive greenhouse gas regulations on new and existing power plants, in addition to a suite of costly new power rules already proposed or issued by EPA. These rules combined will drive up energy prices, send American jobs overseas, and have the potential to shut down America’s coal industry. …

Closing 200 power plants is going to cause brownouts or blackouts.

Does anyone now doubt that this president is “transforming America” as he promised when he was elected 5 years ago. He and his administration are destroying America one industry at a time, and driving us to bankruptcy. This is not a mistake, not done in ignorance, but a planned, purposeful assault on the only nation of its kind in the world, to make us “like the other nations”, ruled by socialists and tyrants. Freedoms light is but an ember of what it used to be, the lights have gone out in the “city on the hill”.
At this late hour, can it still be saved?

Closing 200 power plants is going to cause real pain and suffering to a whole lot of people.

What’s Obama planning to do? Replace those closed plants with solar panels and windmills? Maybe unicorns squirting out magic skittles for power?

This disruption is going to flash back in his face.

Yes, but every one of us is going to have to get on our feet to do it.

Good luck to the Obamanoids with trying to find a place to recharge their “smart” phone or “smart” car. Not very flippin’ “smart” if you ask me.

I’ve been saying that Obama wants to bankrupt the private industries so China could by the coal assets cheap.

Article manages somehow to avoid a sharp drop in price of nat gas as a major factor in the switch from coal. Changes the equation.

We lived through the out of sight electricity prices forced on us by Enron's games. It was awful. People, especially those on fixed incomes, lost their homes because they couldn't fit $500 electric bills into their budget. The governor got booted out of office for it. Using air conditioning was out. We hung our clothes for a family of six outside to dry instead of using the dryer. We literally unplugged everything unless we were actively using it. It was tough, we had teenagers at home at the time.

We didn't learn what Enron was up to until it was too late. Everyone said it was weird, how is it that one year we had enough power but the following year we didn't (by a significant margin) because they were shutting down and rerouting supply and laughing all the way to the bank.

By the time people start getting the massive bills after Obama's antics, the plants will already have been shut down. They will find a way to blame it on Republicans and the people will buy it. We will all be impoverished what with Obamacare premiums and skyrocketing electricity prices.

Obama is doing exactly what he said he would do but the masses didn't listen, they were too busy imbuing him with power to bring about whatever was their pet fantasy.

No, it’s not a lie.

But the article implies that there is only the stick of regulations causing the drop in coal-fired plants. When the carrot of relatively lower gas prices has at least as much to do with it.

IOW, there are several factors to the equation, as there are in most.
