John Wrana was being 'involuntarily' committed for medical treatment Brandished his cane and a shoehorn and police were called to care home

A 95-year-old world War II veteran died after being Tasered and hit with bean bag rounds by police for threatening care home staff - but his family insist he was killed unnecessarily.

Police say that John Wrana, who lived in a Chicago assisting living home, was brandishing his cane, a metal shoehorn and a knife before officers shocked him and hit him with bean bag rounds.

The senior citizen had been reported to authorities because he was being 'involuntarily' committed for medical treatment by staff at the Victory Centre, the Chicago Tribune reported.

He was behaving in 'combative' manner, by threatening staff with his cane and a shoehorn. Wrana was reportedly scheduled to undergo a risky surgery, and was apparently afraid to end up on life support.

When police arrived at Park Forest at around 8.45pm, they said he was ordered to surrender, but he refused to and continued to berate staff and threaten them.

Officers claim he then picked up a 6-inch knife, but his family's attorney alleges that care home staff did not see him do this, The Blaze reported.

He was then shocked by a Taser, hit with rounds of bean bag ammunition, and was taken into custody and then to hospital.

Staff claimed that he was sitting in a chair during the row, suggesting that the force used by authorities might not have been warranted, according to The Blaze.

The Chicago Tribune reported that Mr Wrana was conscious when he was taken to St. James Hospital and Health Centers in Chicago Heights.

But he was then moved to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he died at about 2.30am.

The article the other day where cops in Ohio shot like 140 freaking rounds at the unarmed couple.

Was just beyond belief...

Dear Diary, Today was great! Sun shining, birds singing, and I killed a 95 year old guy for “brandishing” a cane.

“Do I really need the sarc/ for that?”

Nah...the whole event is a sarcasm. What possible threat could an old guy like that be if he had a hundred knives and a bazooka besides?

Was this an instance of “suicide by cop”? The police used “nonlethal” weapons, but what may be nonlethal on a 20 year old gangbanger is lethal on a 95 year old in a nursing home.

full disclosure....I could NEVER be a cop.
I would absolutely suck at that job.
So I admire those who can do it well.

I would never make it thru my first domestic call.

What I didn't care for is how the man was identified as a,"world War II veteran." His status as a veteran is admirable, but its not a "get out of jail free" card.

Yeah, he should have been jailed for not having the procedure the center wanted him to. That's got to be a major felony. And the sooner they stop with that "greatest generation" crap and quit sucking up resources, the better off we'll all be, right?

What I don’t understand is why the PD didn’t deploy a full-on SWAT team, complete with dogs, tank and RPG’s?

(Please detect sarc)

Policemen used to be ok, you had good ones and bad ones, but good or bad they were human beings, now they are just like a bunch of police state mentality programed robots.

. At that point you’re almost trolling for idiots.

I believe they will get the same thing regardless of what they pay because that is what they want.

Yeah, me too, on a domestic call i would just show up and start washing dishes or windows, always something to be done and after all, what are they paying me for anyway?

Surely they are not paying me to come in and murder them.

So you think someone who served in the military should be treated differently than someone who hasn't? And if so, how do we ID the vets ... armbands with yellow stars?
And taking it another step further - should we treat veterans who have seen combat differently than those who were "in the rear with the gear?"
And speaking of that "greatest generation", they also gave us Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and Vietnam. I spent 13 months in combat there ... didn't see a damned thing that was great.

Hell of a way to go. The poor guy survived The Great Depression and WW2 only to die like a dog at the hands of some thugs with a badge. My wife is a nurses aide at our local hospital and has to deal with elderly people who are frequently combative because they are either suffering dementia or Alzhimers or are just scared. Most of the time the family isn’t around to help, not everyone can be with a loved one every minute, so the staff has to deal with the person but there are other ways to deal with elderly people without having to resort to this.

In the old Soviet Union if for nothing else they treated their WW2 vets with respect. They did because the vets would wear what ever citation they been given so people would know. I've seen plenty of America vets from WW2, Korea and Vietnam wearing caps saying so and they certainly get my respect. Sorry your service affected you so. All in all, war does suck.

that though went through my mind and how about the staff that was scared of him? Were they minorities or foreigners devoid of sympathy or understanding of an old white guy 95 years old?
