We have a Toy Rat Terrier {from a Chihuahua mix} we think is having a delayed reaction to her annual vaccines. Last Tuesday she had her Rabies, Bordetella/Kennel Cough, DA2PP, vaccines. Yesterday evening she started breaking out in bumps on her skin as well as vomiting and bloody stool with diarrhea.
Normally I would assume it is a virus except for this part of her history last year. Last year she had the same shots and about a week later these same symptoms happened and had to be treated. The Vet at that time which was one open on a Saturday gave her antihistamine and Steroids. Today different Vet her regular Vet this time gave her Benedryl, Famotidine injection, and Metronidazole orally to take 14 days.
I believe this is being caused by one of the vaccines. The Vets both of them say a week is too long for that too happen. She's still not wanting to hold down food well but bladder and bowel function is there.
Has anyone experienced this before in this timeframe of delay? This is my wife's companion dog and acts also as my service dog for my hearing with hearing aids out. Thanks.
This might sound like a weird question, but is your dog white?
Try 12.5 mg of Benadryl to relieve the itching and help with the allergic reaction. Repeat every 12 hrs. Call your vet, too.
no, all our white dogs have had more skin and allergy issues. good question.
Yea mostly but typical black and brown Ratty markings also. BTW she’s kept in doors except for doing her business. We also have a full size Ratty {Beagle mix} same Vet, same shots, same food, same snacks {Milk Bones} etc and no reaction. They also get their shots within a month or two of each other. Their food is Cesars.

I have a rat terrier jack russel mix who has trouble with vaccines (she’s white) and she suffers seizures with heart worm meds etc...was told by someone some white dogs have this issue.
A lot of dog health problems late in life stem from over-vaccination, in my opinion, having had many live into their mid-teens, all fairly large dogs. The biggie is cancer.
I've been known to pay for a titer test in order to obviate the need for a legally required vaccination, I feel that strongly about it.
We generally expect to see a vaccine/medication/blood transfusion reactions withing 15 minutes of administration (to humans). Bloody stool doesn’t sound like a drug reaction to me, it sounds like the dog ate something it shouldn’t have or has an intestinal infection (hence the metronidazole). If something is irritating a dogs GI tract, we expect to see mucous in the stool. This may be the case with worms or as a result of eating inappropriate objects as puppies are prone to doing. vomiting and diarrhea is also a sign of K9 pancreatitis which is pretty common. Hopefully the vet ruled that out immediately with a snap test. It’s hard to have faith in the vet sometimes but I generally try too as they’re generally very intelligent and qualified. the famotidine is for both allergic reactions and for acid reflux type conditions btw.
My dachshund ( max is 15 now) has had allergic reaction to his vaccines since he was 8 weeks old......has to get a shot before the shot. The first time he reacted he was just a puppy, muzzle and eyes swelled, labored breathing, got him back to the vet just in time. The symptoms appeared within one hour of the vaccine.
How old is your dog? Also, I’d find another Vet....pronto. My vet AVOIDS unnecessary vacs...and the VET community is right now re-evaluating frequency....because of problems.

Ditto - always keep Benadryl in your first-aid kit. You do have one, don’t you? Especially products for pets.
He gave her a shot of it this morning so I'm not sure how long the shot would last in her bloodstream. IOW I don't want to overdose her. At 10 pounds not much room for error. BTW I tried that last year on her with this and it didn't work. She shows vaccine reaction symptoms but the issue the doctors have is it waiting a week to happen. We do live in the woods and yea I thought about Poison Ivy etc. Vet last years said it was unlikely because of a Ratty's coarse fur.
We have a little 3 pound poodle. That combo distemper injection gets her. She screams if you touch her for a few days. We have to pre- treat with Metacam and continue that for a couple of days afterward.
He wouldn’t have given her any more than about 1 mg per pound. Injections don’t metabolize any slower than oral, they just work quicker. It should be okay to give him some moer.
OK thanks She does fine with Heart Worm but two years same issue on vaccines has me convinced one of the two vaccines she can't handle. I give both dogs Tri-Heart Plus for heart worm. I also dose them with Generic Frontline flea prevention every two months. Last dose was about three weeks ago I guess.
Be careful with the metacam.
The wife is a pharmacist and wants to know if the dog appears to have any respiratory distress.
