The Big Broadcast is a Sunday night tradition for families throughout the WAMU listening area. Each week, Big Broadcast host Ed Walker offers listeners priceless recordings of popular radio programs from the '30s, '40s and '50s. Priceless, especially, for a man whose first sentence as a child was, 'Turn the radio on.'

Hi all, a fun lineup tonight with a new show “It Pays to be Ignorant” and ending with Escape.

Don't know about where you are but it's hot outside.

Hello, FRiends! Sunday has arrived quickly with a wonderful "not guilty" verdict on Saturday night!

We have a creepy Escape with Edgar Allen Poe's "Fall of the House of Usher." I think I remember hearing this one before. It seems I recall that they deviate quite a bit from the original story.

The Night Beat synopsis for November 10, 1951 has a different title than the one given by WAMU, so I may not have the correct entry.

These brief synopses are used by permission from the RadioGOLDINdex © 2013 J. David Goldin. Audio details refer to Mr. Goldin's collection.

7 PM EST Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar. March 14, 1956. Part 3. CBS net. "The Clinton Matter". Sustaining. A meeting with the building inspector, who has three bullet holes in him! The final public service announcement and system cue have been deleted, the story is complete. Bob Bailey, Jack Johnstone (producer, director), John Dawson (writer), Roy Rowan (announcer), Jeanette Nolan, Bob Bruce, Frank Gerstle, Lucille Meredith, Carleton Young, Herb Ellis, Jack Petruzzi, Herb Butterfield, Paul Richards, Edgar Barrier, Russell Thorson, Jack Moyles, Amerigo Moreno (musical supervisor). 13:50. 8:30 It Pays To Be Ignorant. February 5, 1948. CBS net. Sustaining. The first question (at the opening): "Why do wedding bells ring?" Hi, Vision! Yes, it’s pretty warm here, too, although we’ve had more than six inches of rain in the past couple of weeks and more in the forecast.

How are things going with you? How is your new job?

On Friday, a couple of our friends surprised us with a house-warming gift of a Big Green Egg! We couldn’t believe it. Keith’s old smoker grill is on its last leg; the smoker box rusted and fell off a long time ago, even though he covered the hole and still uses it. We look forward to trying the Egg.

Hi Gina, wow. What size Egg is it? Those things are not cheap. They must really care about you. That should be quite the change from what Keith was using.

Anything cooking tonight? I did a rib roast on the rotisserie last night which turned out great.

The job is good. I have to get up earlier for a train commute into DC, and the body is still adjusting to that, but it's exciting.

Isn't "Fall of the House of Usher" what Ed plays every Halloween?

It’s a medium Egg, which is good enough for most all of what we do. We still have to get the ceramic plate you have to use to smoke with it, otherwise it’s direct grilling for now.

Yesterday evening, we did pork tenderloin on the old grill, and tonight I’m making lasagna—homemade, instead of Stouffer’s. Well, not FULLY homemade; I’m buying the sauce pre-made but will doctor it with mushrooms, onions and bell peppers.

You’re working in the Belly of the Beast! Wow! I’m glad you’re liking it, though. :-)

Yes, I think it may have been Halloween when Ed last played that show. It’s a so-so adaptation.

There’s a BGE bbq forum somewhere, it may be called eggheads.com. That should be of help.

Yesterday, Keith watched a bunch of You Tube Egg videos. We’ll look for the “eggheads” forum, too. I’m sure he’s going to really like this thing!

I'm not an eggman, but the one thing that makes me jealous is that they are so well insulated so wind and cold temps aren't much of an issue. Unlike webers.

That was a bizarre Dragnet. They tricked the guy into his death. Too bad.
